Heppner Garden Club flower show and tea set Sept. 21-22
Pick your prettiest posies and
feast your eyes on fall flowers
at the Flower Show and Tea,
sponsored by the Heppner
Garden Club at the St. Patrick
Senior Center, Sept. 21-22.
Entries will be received from
7- 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20,
and from 8-10 a m. on Satur
day. The show will be open to
the public from 2-7 p.m. on
Saturday, and from 1-5 p.m.
Sunday.
All amateur gardeners are in
vited to exhibit. More than one
entry per class may be made by
an exhibitor, provided each en
try is of a different cultivar,
type, or color. All blooming
flowers will be accepted and
entered according to many
classifications. Containers for
cut specimens will be provided.
Exhibitors may also enter
several categories for flower
collections. These must include
five stents of any annual or
perennial. There can also be a
collection of five different
varieties of the same flower.
One class will feature a collec
tion of flowers of any and all
types that are the same color.
Arrangements will be featur
ed in several different catego
ries according to design.
Creative designs can also be
entered in classes entitled
"harvest” (using fruit, vege
tables, flowers) and in "basket
beautiful" as well as "arrang
er's choice" or one class featur
ing all dried natural plant
materials.
Participants 15 and under are
encouraged to enter in the.
youth division. One class in
this division features animals or
people made from vegetables
and/or flowers. Also included
is a class for any plant gown by
any exhibitor this year. Or par
ticipants in the youth division
may enter any flower arrange
ment of the exhibitor's choice.

are all part of a benefit barbecue
planned for Saturday, Sept. 14
in Fossil. Proceeds from the
barbecue, sponsored in part by
the Wheeler County Stock-
growers Association, will bene
fit the opposition campaign to
Measure 38, the "Clean Stream
Initiative."
Opponents of Measure 38
have raised over $230,000 of a
goal $550,000 for an advertising
campaign. Wheeler County
residents have contributed
$3,300 to the campaign thus far.

Long-time Heppner busi
nessman Randy Lott has sold
his Main Street appliance
business, Lott's Electric, effec
tive August 15, to Cam George
and Kit and Shirley George, all
of Heppner.
Cam, 28, is already on the
job. His parents, Kit and
Shirley, will also be working at
the store. Sh irley, now
manager of Gardner's Men's
Wear, will begin working there
after the first of the year. The
elder Georges operated the
Sears catalog store on Hepp-
ner's Main Street for many
years.
Cam grew up in Heppner,
graduating from Heppner High
School. He served in the Navy
for six years as an electrician.
He has been working in the
Portland area as a limited
energy electrician.
Cam and his wife, Kim, who
is from Mosier, have three
children, Destiny, five, Court
ney, two, and Maddie, 11
months.
Cam says that the store name
will remain the same. In addi
tion to selling appliances, he
will be doing electrical contrac
ting. Shop hours will be 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Monday through
Friday.
There were 67 present for the senior meal Sept. 4 and five meals
were home delivered. Members of the Christian Life Center serv
ed. Kitty Roach won the free meal ticket. Samora Silva sang dur
ing the meal. Hearing aid assistance was given and blood
pressures were taken before the meal. The Nutrition Site Com
mittee met at 1 p.m.
The menu for Sept. 18 will be pork, potatoes with gravy, green
beans, cranberry jello salad, biscuit and brownies. Members of
the Seventh-day Adventist and Nazarene churches will serve.
There will be another poetry reading before the meal.
Eleven volunteers met to fold newsletters for the Extension Ser
vice on Thursday, Sept. 5.
One table of pinochle was in play Friday afternoon.
The senior bus left Heppner at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, with Ed
Baker driving. Several passengers boarded at the Senior Center
and others were picked up en route to Pendleton. Twelve peo
ple enjoyed dinner at the King's Table and the Round-Up Dress
Up Parade.
Elsie Huston's son brought a large variety of vegetables from
Irrigon Sunday to be shared with the tenants. Some were also
given to the meal site.
There is a free musical and entertaining workshop on aging
sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging and the Hermiston
Senior Center. "I'v e Never Been Old Before" will be held Mon
day, Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. at Hermiston. A potluck dinner will follow
the workshop. The senior bus will depart Heppner at 8:30 a.m.
The Heppner Garden Club will hold their flower show at the
Senior Center Sept. 21-22. The public is invited to attend.
The Red Cross will hold a blood drawing at the center Tues
day, Sept. 24 from 2-6 p.m.
Other dates to remember: Tuesday and Thursday exercise, 10
a.m .; Wednesday blood pressures taken, 11 a.m., senior meal,
noon; Friday cards, 2 p.m.; Sunday movie, 7 p.m.
