Busy summer for Morrow County Fair and OTPR Court
I
r, Í
Morrow County Fair and Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo Queen Brenda Holtz
(front) and Princesses (L-R) Dawn Boor, Stormy Howard and Beth
Hermanns
It's been a busy spring and
summer for the four girls
representing the 19% Morrow
County Fair and Oregon Trail
Pro Rodeo. After the Queen's
Coronation at the Town and
Country banquet in January,
the girls, Queen Brenda Holtz,
and Princesses Dawn Boor,
Stormy Howard and Beth Her
manns, and their mothers kept
busy putting together ideas and
outfits and planning and work
ing at fund raisers.
In February, the court helped
the Heppner Future Farmers of
America serve coffee and juice
at the Morrow County Grain
Grower's Appreciation Break
fast. They also sold tickets for
a drawing on a Black Hills Gold
ring to be held Sunday, Aug.
18 at the Morrow County
Rodeo.
St. Patrick's weekend, they
were busy speaking at the
KUMA Coffee Hour, riding in
the parade, competing and
handing out awards at the
Motorcycle Barrel Race, and
helping with stock at the Rop-
ing-Ride.

In May, the girls took a first
place award at the Arlington
Rodeo Parade, earning $10. At
Spray, they received a first
place ribbon in the courts divi
sion of the parade. They also
rode in the Waitsburg, WA.
Days of Sport Parade.
They took time out from their
parade schedule, however, to
help out at the Methodist-
Lutheran Friday School before
Mother's Day and to speak at
a meeting of the North Morrow
County Businessw om en's
group.
In June, the court traveled to
Sisters for a Saturday morning
parade where they placed se
cond in the courts division.
They were in the afternoon
rodeo grand entry and stayed
to watch the rodeo perfor
mance. That evening, for the
first time, they wore their
cream shirts, tapestry vests,
and jeans for the grand entry,
Most of the girls attended the
dance at the grade school
before turning in for the night.
Also in June, the queen and
princesses spoke to the Hepp
ner Soroptimists, inviting them
to this year's events.
July was a busy month star
ting with the Fourth of July
festivities in lone. They gather
ed across from the park for a
couple of hours to sell tickets
for the Black Hills Gold ring-a
winner will be drawn at the
Morrow County Rodeo on
Sunday. The queen and her
princesses rode in the parade
with four of the pennant
bearers. They all got together
for a barbecue at Princess
Dawn's parents' house, then
spent the rest of the day and
evening together enjoying the
many activities.
The next weekend was long
and very hot, beginning at 3:30
a.m. Saturday when they had
to get up to curl their hair and
get ready to drive to Athena for
the Caledonian Days Parade.
After arriving in Athena,
there was another hour of
brushing horses, polishing
tack, and dressing both the
horses and the girls before they
were ready to line up for the
parade. It's a lot of work, but
the court and pennant bearers
agreed it's well worth the time
and work when they see all the
warm, friendly faces along the
parade route. After the parade,
everything had to be put away
just so, to keep it ready for the
parade Sunday morning in
Elgin.
It was a hot drive towing
horse trailers from Athena to
Elgin and the horses were tied
in the shade to the horse
trailers for the afternoon and
night. A rodeo grounds camp-
out was fun and a good chance
for the families to spend time
together.
The queen left her official
mount to cool off in a paddock
near Helix and borrowed a
backup horse, " S c o t c h " ,
belonging to Penny Krebs for
the Elgin events. Sunday mor
ning, everyone was able to
sleep in until at least six a.m.
before starting to brush and
ready horses, go to the Elgin
court chaperone's house to
clean up and curl hair to get
ready to line up for the parade
at nine a.m. They attended the
queen's luncheon and con
tinued to represent Morrow
County in the rodeo's grand
entry.

The court, along with the fair
committee and rodeo commit
tee, visited the July 16 Chamber
of Commerce meeting to
answer questions about the
event and invite all to attend.
The Fort Dalles Days and
Rodeo Parade brought a first
place ribbon in the courts divi
sion. The court attended the
queen's lucheon at the Tapa
dera and spent the afternoon
cooling off at a local motel's
pool. They wore their tapestry
vests and jeans for the evening
rodeo grand entry.
The court dads have definite
ly not been idle. They have a
big job transporting and help
ing with the horses, which
more than gives them bragging
rights.
The court left the following
Friday for Chief Joseph Days
where they captured another
first place ribbon for their ef
forts. Again the queen borrow
ed Scotch from the Krebs fami
ly, leaving her official mount at
home to rest.
Princess Dawn's mother has
been busy videotaping the girls
at each appearance and plans
to present a videotape of
memories to the princesses and
queen at the end of the season.
This week the court will do
several radio spots advertising
the fair and rodeo and visit to
the nursing home to get ready
for fair week.
They rode in the Hermiston
Starlite Parade and did several
radio spots for the Morrow
County Fair and Rodeo in ear
ly August.
Following the busy fair and
rodeo week, the court will
round out the season with the
Walla Walla Frontier Days
Parade, the Pendleton Dress-
up Parade and the Westward
Ho! Round-Up Parade.
