Twins celebrate 90th birthday
A ninetieth birthday celebra
tion for twins Bertha Moore
Street and Callie Moore Hud
dleston, was hosted for family
members by Tom and Garnett
Huddleston and family, of
Heppner; and Ken and Billie
Jean Waud and family, of
Ephrata, Washington, at the
Heppner St. Patrick's Senior
Center on Aug. 4.
A noon luncheon buffet was
served to over 100 relatives,
coming from as far as Amherst,
New Hampshire, as well as
various locations in Oregon,
Washington and California.
Special guests were two
sisters-in-law, Clarice Moore,
widow of Clarence Moore,
from Canby, and Rachel
Moore, widow of Ralph Moore,
from Hermiston.
Highlights of the afternoon
program were the "Happy Bir
thday Grandma's" song and
presentation of flowers by Tom
Huddleston's grandchildren,
directed by Patty Braun and
Molly Pahlen. This was follow
ed by Darcy Debok, "Miss
Portland 1996," daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Debok of
Tigard, dancing Scottish High
land dances, including an Irish
jig. Darcy is an award-winning
Scottish dancer.
A "Moore Family History
and Memories" were related
by Billie Jean Waud, beginning
with the five Moore families
who came on the Mayflower as
researched by retired Army
Colonel Howard Moore, Fort
Worth, Texas.
James Emmett Moore and
May Ryder Moore came with
their infant son, Clarence, to
the Lonerock valley in 1904 to
a homestead from Galax, Vir
ginia. Emmett Moore had come
earlier and worked for various
sheepmen, including Paul
Hisler, Sr., of Heppner. He
saw opportunity in the avail
ability of land and returned to
Virginia to marry and bring his
young bride and son to Hepp
ner via train, then buggy to
Their heW home. / •
Two years later, the twins,
Callie and Bertha, were born in
Lonerock. They were delivered
by midwife Aunt Lucy Robin-
son. The twins grew up in the
Lonerock area, attending the
school there, which had grades
\.\2.
S a u
When they were 13 years old,
the twins wrote letters to their
friends, mailing them at the
Lonerock post office, neglecting
to stamp them. An aunt, Myr
tle Huddleston, deposited
them in a crevice in a partition
in the post office, where they
were found recently by Jack
and LaVelle Stephens when
they purchased and remodeled
the old store and post office.
Some of the letters written in
1919 by the twins and brother,
Harvey, were addressed to
Zella Madden Pringle, a class
mate and Moore family friend.
Two of the letters were shared
with the audience.
Callie Huddleston moved
from Hermiston to Heppner's
senior center three years ago
to be near her son and family.
Bertha and her husband,
Rollie Street, moved from
Walla Walla to Redding, Cali
fornia, in 1979 to be near fami
ly. Bertha has twin grand
daughters, Barbara Winkle and
Belinda Pritchett of Redding,
who attended the event with
their families.
Bertha and Callie look for
ward to their annual trip to
Lonerock on Memorial Day to
decorate the family graves and
renew ties with friends, neigh
bors and relatives, said a fami
ly spokesperson.
