Morrow County School
District's newly-hired assistant
superintendent, Michael J.
Keown started work for the
district July 1.
The assistant superinten
d e n t 's position has been
reinstated after several years of
absence to help the district cope
with a larger enrollment in a
wide-spread district, new pro
grams, a growing number of
students enrolled in special
programs and ever-increasing
state and federal regulations.
Keown, 46, was bom in
Pendleton and grew up in
Walla Walla. He graduated
from Oregon State University
with bachelor's and master's
degrees in English education.
He received his administration
certification from the University
of Oregon and has extensive
experience in administration.

he spent three years as prin
cipal at Condon. He accepted
a position as principal-super
intendent at Huntington, be
fore taking a job as superinten

District which serves the towns
of Richland and Halfway in
Baker County. He was super
intendent there for seven years
before moving to Oakridge
where he was superintendent
four years prior to coming to
Morrow County.
Keown, 46, and his wife,
Kari, have two daughters,

cess of buying a home in
Heppner.
"W e're excited to be here,"
said Michael. "It's going to
work out really w ell." " I
think you have a really good
school system here. Academ
ically it looks like the kids are
doing well," added Keown. "I
think it will be a pleasure work
ing here."
The family's move to Hepp
ner will also bring them closer
to Michael's father and brother
who live in Walla Walla.
