Scholarship Trust Board of
Directors announces that ap
plications are now available for
the Lexington $500 scholarship
at the Lexington office of Mor
row County Grain Growers.
A student who has com
pleted one full year (two se
mesters or three quarters) at an
accredited voc-tech school, col
lege or university, is a graduate
of either lone or Heppner High
School (HHS) and their
parents' or spouse's legal
residence is in the Lexington
voting precinct may apply.
Applications must be return
ed by August 1,19% . For more

Winners of the scholarship
this year are Melissa McElligott
and Marie Tworek of lone, and
Ben Ewing and Tina Kemp of
Heppner.
Melissa McElligott, who
earned honors in the classroom
and as an athlete, was award
ed a $500 scholarship in honor
of the Kinzua Corporation of
Seattle. She plans to attend the
University of Nevada this fall.
Marie Tworek, the salutorian
of the 1996 lone graduating
class, earned a $500 scholarship
from the trust to help with her

biology degree at Oregon State

in the field of secondary educa
tion. She was awarded a $500
scholarship.

Lavem G. "Pete” Hams, 74,
of lone, died Monday, June 3,
19%, at Moses Lake, Washing
ton. Graveside services were
held Friday, June 7,19% at the
Heppner Masonic Cemetery.
Mr. Hams was bom August
9, 1921, at Hardman, to James
and Lavelle Kirk Hams. He
grew up in the Hardman area
and attended school there. He
worked on the family ranch
near Hardman and also logged
for many years.
He served with the U.S. Ar
my during World War II, then
returned to the area.
On October 16,1959, he mar
ried M arjorie Timme, at
Stevenson, Washington.
He did custom harvesting
before starting his own truck
ing business. He owned and
operated Hams Truck Lines un
til his retirement in 1986.
Mr. Hams was a member of
Heppner BPOE 358. He had
been a resident of lone for over
40 years.
Survivors include his wife,
Marjorie, at the home; daugh
ters, Tanna McIntyre of Moses
Lake, Janet Thompson of lone,
Susan Russell of Phoenix, Ari
zona, and Linda Green, also in
Arizona; 13 grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may

Father Ed Obermiller officiated at the wedding of Martha
McElligott and Scott Tevault on May 18, 19%. The double-ring
ceremony was held at the Chapel of Christ the Teacher, Univer
sity of Portland campus.
A wedding buffet dinner followed at Shenanigan's on the
Willamette.
A joint barbecue reception for Scott and Martha, and Dick and
Jenni McElligott, who were married last fall, will be held at the
Dick McElligott ranch Saturday, July 6.

returning to Heppner High
School again this year, to put
on another girls' basketball
camp for girls in grades 5-12,
June 20-21 at the Heppner High
School gymnasium. Sessions
will be from 9 a.m.-noon, and
1-4 p.m. Cost is $50 per partici
pant; this includes instruction,
an individual evaluation report,
a camp t-shirt and awards.
Coach Taylor will bring some
of her Lady Wildcat players to
help with the camp. "The
camp emphasis is on individual
skills, individual offense, posi
tion break-down, individual
and team defense, contests,
team play and fun," said local
organizer Donna Moeller.
Coach Taylor was selected Big
Sky Coach of the Year, and
coached her Lady Wildcats to
their best ever finish this year.

St. Patrick’s Senior Center
Bulletin Board
There were 78 people present for the senior meal June 5; eight
meals were home delivered and two were taken out. Members
of the Lutheran Church served and helped clean up. Pete Schwar-
zin won the meal ticket and Georgia Lynch received the door
prize which was a basket of flowers.
A meeting on reinstating the meal site committee was held
following the meal. Eva Mabbot and Corol Mitchell of CAPECO
were present for the meeting. Election for committee members
will be held Wednesday, June 12.
The menu for June 19 will be cold sliced turkey, three-bean
salad, fruit, vegetable tray, bread and strawberry shortcake.
Members of the lone Church of Christ will serve.
One table of cards was in play Friday afternoon. Seven seniors
watched the movie, "The Unforgiving" Sunday evening.
A guitar concert was held at the center Saturday, June 8. There
wasn't a very large audience, but it was very much enjoyed byr
those present. Refreshments of strawberry pie and beverages
were prepared and served by Corol Mitchell and volunteers. Pro
ceeds will benefit the meal site.
The bus departed Heppner at 9 a.m. Monday with 15 seniors
and driver Gerald Bergstrom on board, on their way to enjoy
dinner at the senior meal site in John Day. The next scheduled
bus trip is to the Arlington meal site Tuesday, June 25. The bus
leaves Heppner at 10 a.m. There is a sign-up sheet in the senior
center office.
Everyone is reminded to give blood at the Red Cross blood
drawing Tuesday, June 18 from 2-4 p.m. in the center dining
room. A VFW meeting will be held Wednesday, June 19 at 7 p.m.
Other dates to remember: Tuesday and Thursday exercise, 10
a.m.; Wednesday blood pressure clinic, 11 a.m., senior meal,
noon; Friday cards, 2 p.m.; Sunday movie, 7 p.m.
