scholars
announced
The selection committee for
the Carl W. Troedson Educa­
tional Fund has announced
grants-in-aid in the amount of
$750 to Morrow County high
school seniors for the 1996-97
school year:

These grants are awarded
from a fund provided by the
last will and testament of
Troedson, a prominent wheat
rancher of the lone area. These
students will be eligible to app­
ly for renewal of their grants in
the following years of their col­
lege or training progiams pro­
vided that they maintain good
academic standing during their
first year of post-high school
study.
The selection committee con­
sists of the Morrow County
School District superintendent,
the pastor of the Valby Luther­
an Church, and the Morrow
County judge, as specified in
Troedson's will.
Award of the Troedson
grants was announced at the
recipients' respective high
school graduation ceremonies.

ASSE looking for volunteer families
Cathy Halvorsen, lone, is
"bringing the world" to the
greater Morrow, Umatilla and
Gilliam county areas. She is a
volunteer area representative
for ASSE International Student
Exchange, a non-profit, public
benefit organization. The
primary goal of ASSE is "to
contribute to international un­
derstanding by enabling for­
eign students to learn about the
United States through active
participation in family, school
and community life," accor­
ding to a ASSE news release.
Halvorsen will be interview­
ing families in the three coun-
ty area to host high school
students from France, Ger­
many, Finland, Switzerland,
Italy, Great Britain, Holland,
Spain, Portugal, Czech and
Slovak republics, Poland,
Japan, Brazil, Thailand, Mex­
ico, Canada, Australia, New
Zealand and the republics of
the former Soviet Union. The
students stay with volunteer
host families for an academic
year and arrive with compre­
hensive insurance and their
own spending money.

May 30. Students were honor­
ed for academic achievement in
the classroom and for participa­
tion in special programs and

the R & W Reading Program.
Cara Osmin's third grade
class, winners of the 1995
SOLV CUP for the best clean­
up project initiated by students,

nor Kitzhaber at the presenta­
tion ceremonies in Salem
earlier this month.
