PUBLIC NOTICE
Dave Gunderson’s sixth grade math class works on Heppner
Elementary School crosswalk project.
The Heppner Elementary
School (HES) Site Council and
HES children felt that the
crosswalk between the elemen
tary and middle schools was
unsafe, so they decided to do
something about it.
Upon the recommendation of
the council, the HES sixth
grade math class, under the
direction of teacher Dave
Gunderson, worked out a plan
for a new crosswalk.
' I really didn't do that
much,” said Gunderson, "I
wanted them to use the skills
they learned in school. Their
job was basically to design a
parallelogram that fit in the
space. It was really their deal.”
• Gunderson said that the 21
students in his math class us
ed a lot of geometry and mea
suring. Once they finished
their measurements, they went
back to their classroom and
came up with the final project.
After their final draft, the city
of Heppner painted the cross
walk for them, which is wider
and has bolder lines than the
previous crosswalk.
Rural Life Sunday at Hope, Valby
Rural Life Sunday will be

service of Valby and Hope
Lutheran churches. Services

Rural Life Sunday originated
in the Christian Church in the
middle of the fifth century in
the village of Vienne, France,
after it was destroyed by earth
quakes, fire, rioting and loot
ing. A Roman Catholic bishop

solemn fast and make public
supplication as an atonement
fo- their sins.
Over the years, this festival
has developed a three-fold em
phasis: petition for forgiveness
of sins, petition for protection
from calamities, and petition
for bountiful crops.
"Today in small town and
rural churches, it is an oppor
tunity to focus on seedtime,
planting and petitions for an
abundant harvest,” said the
Reverend Stan Hoobing.
"Som e churches have big pro
cessions through fields and
farms with hymns, scripture
readings and prayers to rejoice
in the Good News of God.”
