Although the lone Lady Car
dinals have beaten the Powers
Cruisers two out of the three
times the teams have met, this
championship matchup victory
was the sweetest, lone kept to
their game plan, and in the end
their defensive pressure and
run-run offense overpowered
the Cruisers, 60-46, in the state
1A basketball championship in
Baker City Saturday, March 2.
Powers' 6 '5 " Jenny Mowe
got the opening tip to a team
mate who turned the ball over.
Cardinals' Jenny Sullivan put
the first two points on the
board for lone, followed by a
three-point bucket by Melissa
McElligott and two by Steph
anie Haguewood. Powers came
roaring back with Mowe scor
ing three unanswered baskets,
lone's Dawn Boor hit a three-
pointer and quickly followed
with a steal, culminating in a
two point put up. McElligott
successfully hit a three-point
basket and the first quarter
ended with lone in the lead by
one, 15-14.
Mowe scored 20 of her 28
team-high points by the half
and Powers led 29-25 at the
close of two. The Cards had
another good team effort in the
second quarter with McElligott,
Haguewood, Suzy Heideman
and Laree Anderson all scor
ing. However, Heideman also
picked up her third foul early
in the quarter and spent much
of the period on the bench.
The third period of play saw
a change in lone's defense and
they put more pressure on the
ball. The quick pace of the
game wore down Powers'
Mowe and she was held
scoreless in the third while lone
scored 14 more points to take
the lead 39-38 at the end of
three.
Tori Odinet opened the
fourth quarer for lone hitting a
two point field goal. Powers
lost the ball to McElligott and
fouled her in the process.
McElligott hit both free throws.
