All proceeds from the sale will go toward the FFA enrichment program. In the service auction (slave sale), students are auctioned for eight hours of work. Bids may be placed at Heppner High School by calling 676-9138 ext. 26 or by writing the school at Box 67, Heppner. Bids must placed by this Saturday, March 16, and all sales will go to the highest bidder. The minimum bid is $35 for an eight hour day. Students are to complete their eight hours of work by June 2, or arrangments must be made between FFA and the buyer by that date. The FFA advisor may change the placement of a worker if complications arise. By Kara Miller The machinery clicked Friday night, Feb. 19, in the Her miston gymnasium when the lone Lady Cardinals met the Big Sky west number one Wasco County Redsides. The Cards beat the Redsides, 55-25. It was the playoff between the east and west leaders to see who would represent the Big Sky District in the state 1A basketball tourney in Baker Ci ty. It was the fourth year in a row that these two teams met to contest the district cham pionship and it was the fourth time that lone was victorious. It was a team effort with every player contributing and coach Dana Heideman was "real happy with the way the kids came out fired up and ready to go. We played really well. We played with a lot of in tensity, a lot of heart and a lot of desire." From the Wasco County turnover of the opening tip, the Cardinals took control of the game and put the first two points on the board off of a put back by Suzy Heideman. At the end of the first quarter, the Cards led 19-6; and at the end of two, they were ahead 32-11, on a three-point shot by Melissa McElligott at the buzzer. In tense defense and patient of fense were keys to the 21 point lead at the half. The Cardinals increased their lead in the third and were in front, 42-17, on a jump shot by Jenny Sullivan in the closing se cond of the quarter. The Car dinals slowed the tempo in the fourth quarter, but maintained control of the game, building the score. Maci Childers hit a field goal to make the final two points of the game and the score lone 55, Wasco County, 25. Wasco County scoring was led by Ginny Udey with nine, Aimee Lindell with eight and senior Julie Capps scored seven. lone's McElligott led all scor ing with 20 points, including five of six at the free throw line, seven rebounds and five assists. Dawn Boor contributed a three- point bucket and two field By Kara Miller In a see-saw battle through two and a half quarters, the lone Lady Cardinals finally shook off first game jitters to pull ahead with 10 unanswered points in the final minutes of the third quarter against the Alsea Wolverines, 36-26 at the buzzer to take the lead for good. The Cardinals finished their opening round game of the Oregon 1A championship tournament in Baker City with a 50-33 win over Alsea. lone got the opening tip but couldn't capitalize on the ad vantage. Alsea got the rebound and successfully returned for two. Melissa McElligott was fouled on her drive to the bas ket and aced both of her free throws. Alsea scored six unanswered points before the Cardinals got in stride and Laree Anderson connected for two, followed quickly with a turn around by Suzy Heideman for two more and lone was down by two. Heideman hit another basket, then blocked an Alsea put up that McElligott was able to grab and take in for two more points. The quarter ended with lone down by one. The second quarter opened and Heideman was fouled. She made both free throws, then got the rebound from Jenny Sullivan after a trip up and down the floor and put it back for two more points.Heideman was on her way to scoring a game-high 21 points. The half ended with lone up by four 24-20. lone held Alsea's star, Nicole Calderone, to just four points in the first two quarters. Heideman opened the third quarter by scoring two points, but Alsea went on another streak, hitting three unanswer ed baskets until Calderone foul ed Cardinal's Anderson. An derson made one of her free throws. In the scramble for the ball, Sullivan was fouled. She also made one of her two free throws, then Heideman went on a scoring streak of her own. In the process of making a lay- in, Heideman was fouled by Calderone. Heideman got the two point bucket, plus one of her two free throws, then grabbed a rebound and put up two more points. Dawn Boor pulled down a rebound, pass ing it to Anderson who suc cessfully swished a three-point bucket to finish the three quarters with five rebounds and six points. lone led 36-26 at the end of three. Fourth quarter action saw Heideman make two more baskets, block another shot and get the last of her eight re bounds in the game. Coach Dana Heideman said, "The game plan was to go to center Suzy Heideman because we knew Alsea's weakness was their inside game. Suzy played very strong; it was probably her best game of the season. Floor leader McElligott had another excellent game directing our of fense, but even though Suzy and Mel have played a lot of big games and they have the ex perience, you can't win with just two players." Sullivan finished with a team-high 10 rebounds and made two out of her three free throw points. McElligott added another blocked shot, two re bounds and three points to finish the game with 11.
