Melissa McElligott and Suzy Heideman were placed on the first team for the girls, and Luke Swanson made second team all tournament. The lone Lady Cards used defensive pressure and a run- run offense to defeat the defen­ ding state 1A basketball champs 60-46, and claim the state title for their own Satur­ day in Baker City. The Cards tenacious defense forced the number one ranked, and defending state champs, the Powers Cruisers, to turn the ball over 27 times on the road to defeat. lone's leading scorer Melissa McElligott knocked down 30 points, and teammate Dawn Boor added another 10 and four steals to contribute to the win and enable the Lady Cards to bring home the state champion­ ship. It was lone's strategy to run the ball and tire out Power's 6-foot 5-inch center and leading scorer, Jenny Mowe. Mowe still scored 28 points to lead the Cruisers, but it wasn't enough as the Cards also got 10 points from Suzy Heideman, four from Laree Anderson, and two each from Stephanie Haguewood, Niki Sullivan, and Tori Odinet. The game was as close as the score would indicate, as the teams went to the locker room with Powers up by four, 29-25, but lone came back strong in the second half, especially the fourth quarter where they outscored the Cruisers, 21-8, to walk away with the victory. first team Luke Swanson (striped shirt) made second team Melissa McElligott slips one under 6’5" Jenny Mowe We did it!
