Fillies lose to, Heppner cheerleaders and
Sherman Co. team to perform at district
dance
By Donna Moeller
The Heppner Fillies' make up
game in Sherman County on
Tuesday, Feb. 13, proved to be
a frustrating night for the Fillies
who came back with a 49-28
loss.
With the foul ratio 24-9, the
referees played a key role in
helping to take Heppner out of
the game. Coach John Boyer
said, "W e came out flat to start
the game and never really got
things going."
Lexi Matteson led all scoring
with nine points, followed by
Jill Barber with seven. Lori
Moeller, Jossie Evans and Min
dy Binschus each added four
points round out the scoring.

Adam Doherty (13) and Chris Sykes put pressure on Pilot Rock

With a last second shot that
cleared the net when the
buzzer sounded, the Heppner
Mustangs continued their climb
to the district tournament with
a win over the stubborn Pilot
Rock Rockets 52-50 last Friday
night.
Heppner was down by 12
points when the Mustangs
rallied and capped the com
eback with a last second swish
by Mustang center Ben Hubert.
The Mustang's had brought
the ball up court looking to go
inside when the ball got away
from forward Chris Sykes.
Sykes dived into several Rocket
players retrieved the ball toss
ed it to Hubert who made a
long arching fade away jumper
from deep on the baseline. The
crowd held it's breath and the
ball fell through, keeping the
Mustangs in contention for that
precious fourth place slot in
league standings.
Despite being out of the
playoff race the Rockets played
tough and led the Mustangs
30-24 at the half. They con
tinued to lead at the end of the
third, but the Mustangs reach
ed down deep coming up with
big plays to outgun the
hometown team 17-8 in the
fourth and come away with the
win.
Eric Schonbachler had a good
nigh for the Mustangs, scoring
14 points. Hubert also did well
toting up 16.
O thers scoring for the
Mustangs were: Justin Mat
teson with 7, Jim Schlaich 11,
and Chris Sykes added 4.
To the shock of the Heppner
crowd, it looked like a repeat of
the last time Heppner and
Stanfield met, only this time
the Mustangs came away with
the victory.
Both teams were knotted
with a 7-5 conference record, so
Monday night's game was a
playoff to determine who
would get the last district tour
nament spot. Heppner kept its
cool, held off a Stanfield rally
and walked away with the
67-64 victory.
Eric Schonbachler provided
the big play this time, swiping
the ball from one of Stanfield's
quick guards and driving the
length of the court for the score
to put Heppner up by two.
Stanfield missed a shot next
trip down the floor and were
forced to foul. Ben Hubert
made one of two free throws to
put the Mustangs up by three.
But as everyone in the gym
knew, Stanfield can shoot the
threes. But their effort with 8
seconds left didn't connect and
Hubert pulled in the rebound
to secure Heppner's win.
Heppner beat the Tigers by
40 points in their first meeting
this year, but the second time
on Stanfields home court, the
Tigers came from behind to
take the win and in the end
cause Monday's playoff game.
The game was played in Her-
miston on a nuetral court.
The victory put the Mustangs
into district tournament action
where they will face Umatilla at
3p.m. Friday at the Convention
Center in Pendleton.
Jim Schlaich and Schon
bachler led the Mustang scor
ing attack Monday, with 15
points apiece. Justin Matteson
and Hubert each chipped in 12.
Others scoring were: Chris
Sykes 9 and Dan Burnside 2.

Friday, Feb. 16, the Heppner
illies traveled to Pilot Rock and

The Fillies held the Rockets
roreless the first quarter and

3-9 lead. The Rockets had a
mgh night; their baskets
wouldn't fall. Heppner set the
me early by playing great
defense and everyone scored.
Lori Moeller was the leading
scorer with 12 points. Tina and
Toni Kemp each added nine
points. Lexi Matteson had
eight; Jossie Evans and Mindy

each; Annie Hisler had five;
