HHS Dance Team
schedules clinic
The Heppner High School
Dance Team has once again
planned a dance clinic for area
young people.
This year' clinic, open to
anyone in kindergarten
through 12th grade, will be
held Monday through Thurs­
day, Feb. 12-15, from 3:45 to 5
p.m. at the Heppner High
School cafeteria.
Transportation to the clinic
will be provided by school bus
from the elementary school to
the high school.
Cost for the clinic is $5 per
pupil.
'Casper the Ghost' is this
year's theme for the clinic.
Flyers advertising the event
were to go home with grade
school students this week.
Parents are asked to sign
release forms and return them
to the high school as soon as
possible or by the first day of
the clinic.
Students attending the clinic
will perform during half time of
the Heppner High School boys'
varsity basketball game vs.
Sherman County Saturday,
Feb. 17. Approximate time of
the performance will be 7 p.m.

Attorney's office in Heppner
reports handling the following
business during the past week:
Jan. 25: Michael Wayne
Phillips, 42, Irrigon, previous­
ly convicted of Burglary I on
Feb. 16, 1995, appeared in court
on Jan. 25 for probation revoca­
tion proceedings. He failed to
pay court-ordered obligations
and absconded supervision; as
a result, he was ordered to
serve 30 days in county jail,
serve the remainder of his pro­
bation and ordered to pay
$1610 by February 1998.
Nathan R. Hammons, 42, for­
merly of Heppner, was con­
victed of Driving While License
Suspended and ordered to pay
a fine of $125, plus assessments
totalling $76 and sentenced to
30 days in county jail, suspend­
ed on the condition that he pay
$201 within one year.
Jay Dean Stanridge, Grants
Pass, was convicted of Driving
While License Revoked, sen­
tenced to 30 days in county jail,
suspended on the condition
that he pay $373, to be paid
within 18 months of sentenc­
ing.
Linda Kuntz, 29, Portland,
was cited into court for Failure
to Pay Court-Ordered Child
Support, sentenced to 30 days
in jail, suspended on the con­
dition that she pay $110 a
month for 24 months.
Feb. 2: Casey D. Rodriguez,
in probation revocation pro­
ceedings, was found in Con­
tempt of Court. His probation
was extended to Feb. 2, 1998
and he was given credit for five
days served in county jail and
ordered to pay $50 a month
court-ordered obligations
which he had failed to satisfy.
Mark Alan Mills, Klamath
Falls, originally sited for No
Angling License on Nov. 2,
1991, failed to appear for the
hearing. A bench warrant was
issued and he was arrested and
ordered to serve 30 days in
county jail, suspended all but
one day, with one year's pro­
bation, and pay assessments
totalling $73 before expiration
of his probation.
Hope, Valby
churches plan
services
"You have heard it said, but
I say it unto you" is the theme
of the sermon that Pastor Stan
Hoobing will be giving to the
congregations of Hope and
Valby Lutheran on Sunday,
Feb. 11. It is also the Sunday of
the month that the congrega­
tional members pick the hymns
for the Service of the Word
celebration.
The service and Sunday
School at Valby is at 9 a.m.,
with Sarah Carlson accompa­
nying the congregation on the
piano.
Worship and Sunday School
at Hope Lutheran will be-at
11:00 a.m. Dr. Jeanne Berretta
will accompany the congrega­
tion on the piano.
"Jesus the Messiah Among
U s" is a special Bible study
planned for members and
friends of Hope Lutheran. It
meets in the church basement
on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m.
Men, women and teenagers are
welcome to attend.
Friday School will be back at
Hope on Friday, Feb. 9 from 9
a.m.-3 p.m. Parents and child­
ren are reminded to bring offer­
ings for the Heifer Project, a

Obituaries
Robert D. Runnion
Funeral Mass for Robert D.
Runnion was this Wednesday
morning, February 7, at St.
Patrick's Catholic Church in
Heppner with concluding ser­
vice and interment following at
the Heppner Masonic Ceme­
tery.
Mr. Runnion, 69, of Wood-
bum, formerly of Pendleton
and Heppner, died Thursday,
February 1, 19%, at Sun City,
Arizona.
He was born January 14,
1927, at Douglas, Wyoming, to
V.R. and Pearl Williams Run­
nion. He attended school in
Wyoming before the family
moved to Heppner where he
graduated from high school.
He enlisted and served with
the U.S. Navy during World
War II.
In 1948, he married Jean
Turner at Heppner.
He then attended and gradu­
ated from the University of
Oregon.
The couple moved to Pendle­
ton in 1950 where they lived
until 1992 when they moved to
Woodburn.
Mr. Runnion had several oc­
cupations during his time in
Pendleton, including deputy
sheriff, gas station owner, radio
sales manager and manager of
the local SAIF office. He retired
in 1986.
He was a long time member
of the Elks and Lions organi­
zations.
Survivors include his wife,
Jean, at the home; sons, Bill
and Steve, both of Portland,
Todd of Eugene; daughter
Janet Jobes of Eugene; sister,
Geraldine DeSimone, of Eu­
gene; and three grandchildren.

Hospital, P.O. Box 9, Heppner,

ner was in charge of arrange­
ments.
Robert C. Shuman
The funeral for Robert C.
Shuman will be 2 p.m. Thurs­
day at the Heppner Nazarene
Church with concluding service
and burial at the Heppner Ma­
sonic Cemetery.
Mr. Shuman, 74, of Hepp­
ner, died Thursday, February
1, 1996, at Holtville, California.
He was born January 10,
1922, at Flora, to Charles and
Ora Schmachorst Shuman. He
grew up at Flora and attended
school there.
He served with the U.S. Ar­
my during World War II.
He moved to Lewiston,
Idaho, where he met and later
married Lorena Dickison on
February 1, 1947. They settled
at Heppner in 1968.
Mr. Shuman was employed
by the Oregon State Highway
Department.
He enjoyed hunting and
fishing, camping and hiking,
traveling, horseshoes and
crafts.
He was a member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include sons, Lo­
ren of Yuma, Arizona, and
Robert of Eagle Creek; daugh­
ters, Jeannie Lundgren of Pas­
co, Washington, and Marie
Corwin of Long Creek; broth­
ers, John, Joe and Alden; and
sisters Viola Shafer, Grace Ly­
tle, Gerva Hays and Charlotte
Brooks; 15 grandchildren and
eight great-grandchildren. His
wife, Lorena, died in March
1995, and two sister, Alta Wig­
gins and Florence Noyes, also
preceded him in death.
Memorial contributions may

Hospital, P.O. Box 9, Heppner,

Fay Helen Ferguson
Fay Helen Ferguson, former­
ly of Heppner, died Feburary 3,
19%, in Portland. Interment
will be at the Rogue River
Cemetery at Gold Beach. No
funeral services will be held.
Mrs. Ferguson was bom May
28, 1903, at Portland to Joseph
Warren Heiny and Hester
Anne Heslin Heiny.
Mrs. Ferguson's grand­
mother, Drusilla Missouri Dun­
bar Heslin was a pioneer in
Oregon, traveling the Oregon
Trail in 1850 with her parents
and grandparents. They settl-
.ed in what became Fairview,
near Portland. Mrs. Ferguson's
father joined a group of men
who unsuccessfully searched
for gold in the Priest Lake area
of Northern Idaho in 1895.
Mrs. Ferguson married her
husband, Eugene O. Ferguson,
on June 17, 1923, at Portland.
They lived 51 years in or
around Heppner, where Fay
had been a schoolteacher in a
one-room schoolhouse when
they met. They then moved to
Hermiston, where they lived
for another 20 years.
Mrs. Ferguson was a mem-
bor of the Order of the Eastern
Star and the American Legion
Auxiliary in Heppner. She was
involved in the Bookworms
Club in Heppner and in Her­
miston. She won several
awards at the Morrow County
Fair in Heppner for her quilts
and preserves. She was a
member of the Heppner United
Methodist Church.
For the past several years,
Mrs. Ferguson has been af­
flicted with Alzheimer's and for
the last two years, she lived in
an adult foster home in the i
Beaverton area and her hus­
band lived nearby in an apart­
ment.
Mrs. Ferguson is survived by
her husband; sons, Richard,
Burien, WA., and Charles
'Ted', Gold Beach; daughter,
Nancy Jean Rounsefell, Boring;
11 grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her
parents, her brother, Warren
Heiny, his wife, Eva Schneider
Heiny, and two grandsons.

U of Idaho lists
honor students
The University of Idaho at
Moscow has released the fall
term dean's list. Local students
who qulaified include: Nina
Tucker, Hermiston, College of
Agriculture and Brent Sheir­
bon, Lexington, College of
Business.
In order to qualify, students
must earn a grade point
average specified by their
academic discipline while
registered for a minimum
number of credit hours deter­
mined by the various UI
colleges.
