lone Cardinals defeats W heeler Falcons

Both the lone Cardinals and
(Fossil) Wheeler Falcons' teams
came to the Saturday, Jan. 20
contest undefeated and wanted
this victory. But it came right
down to who wanted it the
most. lone won the game,
42-22. Rebounds and defensive
pressure were key for both
teams' offenses.
The game started quickly,
with lone getting the tip, but
Wheeler stole it away to put the
first points on the board. The
play was fast up and down the
floor, with both teams missing
some easy shots but lone's
pressure defense caused the
Falcons to turn the ball over
several times.
Melissa McElligott continued
to drive the key and was re
peatedly fouled. She went to
the line to score six for six chari
ty points. She also hit a three-
point shot and the first quarter
ended with lone, 11, Wheeler,
6 .
In the second quarter, lone's
defense stepped up a notch
and they were successful at
holding Wheeler to just four
points, while the Cards added
13 more to their score. McElli
gott added another charity
point and two steals that end
ed in four points to close the
half, lone, 24, Wheeler, 10.
The Falcons opened the third
quarter with a quick two-point
field goal. lone had a slow
quarter, adding only five more
to the score while Wheeler
made eight to narrow the
margin to lone, 29, Wheeler,
18.
The fourth quarter pace pick
ed up and it proved to be ex
citing action, with both teams
running the floor well. Suzy
Heideman got two points in the
first 30 seconds of the quarter.
Kara Miller hit a three-point
shot. Dawn Boor added two
points to make the score, lone
36, Wheeler, 20, with four
minutes left in the game.
Then the Falcons started
committing fouls and Kelly Pot
ter got called for her fifth,
which sent Heideman to the
line to make one of two free
throws. lone held the Falcons
to just four points in the last

The Weston-McEwen fresh
men came to lone to give the
Cardinal JVs a contest as Helix
does not have a JV team. The
Cardinals won the match,
44-26.
The Cardinals got the tip but
could not benefit with a score.
The TigerScots got the first two
points of the game. But that
was the end of the polite hos
pitality. The defense caused a
number of Weston-McEwen
turnovers and lone was able to
score on them. The first quarter
score was lone, 16, and West
on-McEwen, 5.

period of play, and won, 44-22.
McElligott led lone with 21
points, while six teammates,
Laree Anderson, Stephanie
Haguewood, J. Sullivan, Boor,
Miller and Heideman contri
buted to the score. Heideman
led the rebounding with eight,
while McEligott added six, and
Miller and J. Sullivan each had
five.

A fifth quarter was added to
the varsity game to allow the
reserves an opportunity to
play. Miller led the team with
four points. Angie Ball added
the other two to end the quar
ter, lone 6, Wheeler 2. Ball also
led the Cardinals with three
rebounds.
The Cardinals travel to Echo
Friday, 26, for their next league
game.

Cutsforth tied for first in the
16-yard event at the Morrow
County Gun Club shoot, held
Jan. 21. They each broke 23 out
of 25 targets.
Second went to Kelwayne
Haguewood with a 21.
The handicap was led by C.
Cutsforth, shooting a 23,
followed by Mike Jones, with a
22 .
Four Annie Oakleys were
played out with Loren Wool-
side, C. Cutsforth, Haguewood
and Childers each taking a win.
Because of the Super Bowl
weekend, the Gun Club will
open at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan.

lone, 23, Weston-McEwen, 11.
In the third quarter, lone
added 11 points put up by
Dawn Boor, Tori Odinet, Maci
Childers and N. Sullivan. lone
then led 34-15. Fourth quarter
points were scored by Brenda
Holtz, Childers, N. Sullivan,
Miller and Ball. The game con
cluded with lone ahead, 44, to
Weston-McEwen, 26.
Coach Kelley Swarat said he
"dreamed up a new defense
and offense" and "w as pleas
ed with the skill the team
showed in running it and the
success the team had using it.
It shows definite positive
possibilities and 1 think we will
work on refining it and improv
ing our execution."
N. Sullivan and Boor had one
of their best scoring games. All
of the members of the team put
points on the board for the
Cardinals.
The Fillies traveled to West
on-McEwen on Friday night,
Jan. 19. The Fillies lost to the
TigerScots, 50-41.
The girls came out ready to
play and gained a quick seven
point lead. However, the Fillies
began to have ball control pro
blems and trouble scoring and
the TigerScots soon gained the
lead and never looked back.
The Fillies trailed by twenty
points at the end of the third
quarter. The Fillies fought back
in the fourth quarter to end on
ly nine points down, 41-50.

out the scoring. Hisler, Bins
chus, Matteson and Barber all
had three-point shots which
helped to keep the Fillies in the
game. Coach John Boyer com
mented, "Even when we had
trouble scoring and fell behind
by twenty at the end of the
third quarter, the kids never
gave up. I have a lot of respect
for our team attitude in those
situations."

The Cardinals hosted Big Sky
opponent Helix on Friday,
Jan. 19, and the Grizzlies fell to
the Cards, 59-17.
Suzy Heideman got the
opening tip for lone, but com
mitted a foul and Helix put the
first two points on the board
with 7:32 in the first quarter of
play. The game started slowly
with both teams shooting poor
ly and having poor ball control,
causing frequent turnovers.
Heideman and Jenny Sullivan
got called for two fouls each in
the first quarter. Melissa Mc
Elligott started her scoring with
a three-point shot.
Second quarter action con
tinued with scoring problems,
but the Cardinals' foul troubles
eased. Then, with a little less
than two minutes left in the
quarter, aided by their fans'
support, the Cardinals started
to turn their game around.
Kara Miller connected with a
three-point shot, Laree Ander
son hit a two-point field goal,
Heideman hit two from the
paint and J. Sullivan also got a
field goal to add 11 points to
lone's score. The first half clos
ed with lone in the lead, 31, to
Helix, 14.
Heideman started the second
half with another shot on target
from the paint on a beautiful
assist from McElligott. lone
held Helix scoreless the third
quarter while the Cardinals' J.
Sullivan, Heideman, Ander
son, Stephanie Haguewood
and Brenda Holtz increased
lone's lead to 55-14. The re
serves played the fourth quart
er and the game ended with
lone on top, 59, to Helix« 17.
The Cardinals' Anderson and
J. Sullivan each scored 10
points and Heideman made 12.
Haguewood and J. Sullivan
each had five assists, while
Haguewood and Anderson
had four rebounds apiece.
Heideman brought down five
boards.

Saturday, Jan. 20 the Fillies
hosted the Stanfield Tigers.
The game was low-scoring for
both teams and ended up with
the final score Fillies 44, Tigers
33.
The Fillies looked sluggish on
the defensive end of the court,
but showed improvements of
fensively over the previous
night. Stormy Howard scored
nine points, Lori Moeller and
Jill Barber, eight points each,
Tina Kemp, six, Annie Hisler,
five, and Toni Kemp, Lindsey
Waterland, Lexi Matteson and
Jossie Evans each added two
points.
The next game for the Fillies
will be at home on Friday night,
Jan. 26, against the Wahtonka
Eagles, and travel to Sherman
County on Saturday. The Fillies
are 3-2 in the league so far.
