Pendleton JVs fall to Heppner
Pilot Rock downs Heppner
Geography Bee finalisted selected

Mathews and Jake Roy.
The local champion will take
a written test to determine
qualification for the Oregon
State Geography Bee in the
spring. In the past two years,
Jonas Healy and Eric Rollis
have qualified to participate in
the state Bee.
The local Geography Bee
geography contest will be held
Monday, Jan. 8, at 8 a.m. in the
Heppner Elementary School
library.
The written qualifying test
was given to students in grades
four through eight in their
social studies classes during the
week of Dec. 4-7. Thirteen
students qualified for the local
Bee: fourth grade-Brian Hague-
wood; fifth grade-Daniel Jep-
sen; sixth grade-Jesse Gutier­
rez, Leland Rill, Jody Maddem;
seventh grade-Craig Scott;
eighth grade-Matt Jepsen, Ben
The written test used for the
local qualifying test was devel­
oped by social studies teacher
A1 Beck. Teachers administer­
ing the test were Pat Hentges,
Jannie Allen, Bill Ewing, Greg
Grant and A1 Beck.

Pendleton came back in the
second half outscoring the
Mustangs 18-16 and 19-13, but
it wasn't enough as Heppner
went on to win.
O thers scoring for the
Mustangs were: Adam Doher­
ty 16; Justin MaLeson 14; Eric
Shoenbachler nd Chris Sykes
10; Jim Schliach 9; Jeff Watkins
2; and David Michael 3.
Ben Hubert knocked down
19 points and grabbed 19 re­
bounds as the Heppner
Mustangs beat the Pendleton
JVs 83-72 last Tuesday, their se­
cond victory over the JVs this
year.
Heppner got the win off ear­
ly, running up a 33-18 buffer in
the first quarter. They also
outscored the JVs in the second
quarter to lead 54-35 at the
Mustangs beat Enterprise to
make tournament finals
Jim Schlaich scored 19 points
to lead Heppner to a 69-50 vic­
tory over Enterprise Friday
night, and secure a spot for the
Mustangs in the championship
game Saturday in the Pilot
Rock tournament.
Heppner lead throughout the
game, although Enterprise
outscored the Mustangs 18-17
in the third period for a run that
came up short in the end.
Others scoring were Ben
Hubert 17; Chris Sykes 14;
David Michael 8; Eric Schon-
bachler 7; Adam Doherty and
Justin Matteson 2.
Heppner hung tough with
Pilot Rock most of the game,
but costly turnovers hurt the
Mustangs as the Rockets pull­
ed ahead in the final quarter to
win their Christmas tourna­
ment championship game
66-51 Saturday night.
At the end of one period Pilot
Rock led by one, 12-13, and at
the half the score was tied at 32.
After three quarters Pilot Rock
was up by seven and then pull­
ed away in the fourth to take
the victory.
Jim Schlaich led the
Mustangs with 13 points, and
other scoring were: Eric Schon-
bachler 11; Chris Sykes 10; Ben
Hubert 8; Adam Doherty 5;
Dan Burnside and David
Michael 2.
The Heppner Fillies traveled
to Pilot Rock Friday and Satur­
day, Dec. 15-16, to participate
in the Rockets' Christmas
Tournament.
The Fillies played the number
four-rated Enterprise Savages
in Friday afternoon play and
lost to the Savages, 61-50; the
Fillies trailed during the entire
game.
Freshman Jill Barber lead all
scoring for Heppner with 11
points.
Coach John Boyer said, "The
intensity was there, we just fail­
ed to execute in certain situa­
tions during the game."
The Fillies regrouped on
Saturday and played a much
more controlled game against
Stan Hoobing, pastor of the
Hope/Valby Lutheran chur­
ches, has been designated as
the chairman of the Heppner
Coordinating Council for 1996.

the Pilot Rock Rockets, and
defeated the Rockets, 81-56.
The Fillies set the pace for the
entire game.
Heppner had two girls scor­
ing in double figures. Annie
Hisler had 24 points, followed
by Lori Moeller with 22 points.
Hisler was also eight out of
nine attempts at the free throw
line.
Boyer said, "Annie Hisler
ran the floor very well. It made
us a much better team today."
The Fillies' next game was
Tuesday, Dec. 19, at home
against Riverside. The Mus­
tangs and Fillies both travel to
lone on Friday, Dec. 22, in their
final game before the Christmas
break. League play will start for
both teams on Friday, Jan. 5.
Fred and Jeannette Ritchie
will celebrate their 50th wed­
ding anniversary with a recep­
tion on Saturday, Jan. 6, from
2-4 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal
Church in Hermiston.
The reception is hosted by
the Ritchies' daughter and
