The Professional Rodeo
Cowboys Association (PRCA)
is the main governing body
behind one of America's fastest
grow ing sports. Nearly 10,000
members fill the PRCA' s ranks,
and the organi7.ation itself sanc-
tions about 800 rodeos each
year.
For n early six decades, the
PRCA has been setting the
standards for the rodeo indus-
try . It ensures that every
PRCA-sanctioned rodeo' is well-
managed and contains healthy,
well-cared-for livestock.
In addition, PRCA cowboys
are without a doubt the most
talented in the rodeo world.
Members are eligible to com-
pete in the richest regular
eason rodeos and can vie for
a spot in the National Finals
Rodeo-an event worth nearly
$2.9 million this year. In all,
PRCA rodeos dish out more
than $21 million during the
course of a rodeo season.
But the PRCA can trace its
roots to more humble beginn-
ings. In 1936, a group of cow-
boys refused to perform at a
prestigious rodeo at the Boston
Gardens . They demanded that
the promoter, W.T . Johnson,
add their entry fees to the prize
money and asked for more ob-
jectivity in the judging. John-
son tried to stage the rodeo
with considerably less talented
amateur cowboys, which pro-
duced a chorus of boos from
the audience. So Johnson final-
ly relented and the Cowboys'
Turtle Association was born.
Originally called "the Tur-
tles" not only because they
started slowly, but also because
they had the courage to " stick
out their necks", the group
changed its name in 1945 to the
Rodeo Cowboys Association.
In 1975 the name changed
again, this time to the Profes-
sional Rodeo Cowboys Associa-
tion .
Despite the organization 's
name, PRCA membership isn ' t
limited to rodeo contestants.
Nearly every pe rson who par-
ticipates in a PRCA rodeo is re-
quired to have a mem ber sh ip
card, ensuring the rodeo's qua-
lity. Stock contractors, judges
and contract person nel are all
PRCA members.
