Nearly 200 members of the community were present when Heppner High School held its annual awards dessert on May 23. Students were recognized for "demonstrating high levels of academic excellence, intellec tual curiosity, and the motiva tion to spend extra time to ac quire knowledge and demon strate mastery of sk ills." Students were also recognized for classroom achievements, academic competitions, and participation in special academic activities. Teacher Steve Brownfield presented the following awards: general science- Jennifer Rankin; biology II- Brent Gunderson; field biology and OASSA science, Jenny Krein. II, Ethan Burnside, Jenny Krein; OASSA foreign language, Traci Dicken son; OASSA language arts, Mark Moeller. 3-on-3 tourney July 8 in Hermiston Greater Hermiston Chamber of Commerce office at 540 South Highway 395, across from Her- m iston's new community center. Sports action starts at 10 a.m. on five courts set up along Main Street. Men's, women's and mixed teams will compete in six age groups: over 41, 20-40, 17-19, 14-16, 12-13, and 11 and under. Registration will be limited to the first 10 teams in each age group. Each team may have up to four players registered, but on ly three play at any one time. Because the event is a double elimination tournament, action usually lasts until about 3 p.m. Registration for the event costs $15 per team and is due by noon, Friday,- July 7, at The Hermiston Herald. Final play schedules will be posted at the Herald offices by 5 p.m., July 7. Last year's under 40 division winners were Steve Hoffert, Mark Edwards, Mike Royer and Randy Robb from the Her miston area BH team, but there is no word yet if the team will be back to defend its 1994 title. Methodist church calls conference Superintendent Sue Owen- Bofferding has asked for an all church conference to be held at the Heppner United Methodist Church Wednesday, June 28, at 7 p.m. The purpose of the con ference is to discuss and vote on a salary package for the Rev.
