Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 21, 1995 - THREE Blood drawing June 22 As warmer weather and sun shine begin to dry out the Nor thwest, Red Cross officials are concerned the region's blood supply may also dry up. Blood donors are needed throughout the summer to ensure blood is available for people needing transfusions. Morrow County residents can d o n a te blood at St. Patrick's Senior Center, on Thursday, June 22, from 2-6 p.m. Donors should be 17 or older, weigh at least 105 pounds, and be in good general health. To schedule a donation appointment, or for more infor m ation, call Pam Sagely, 676-5504, or Red Cross 1 800 868r9057. The goal of the blood drive, sponsored by Pioneer Memorial Hospital, is 55 pints. Red Cross often struggles during the summer months to collect enough blood to meet regional patients' needs for a variety of reasons: high school donors, who contribute about 10 percent of the blood Red Cross collects during the year, are not as available during the summer. Summer activities and vacations tend to interrupt donors' regular giving patterns. Donors can give every 56 days. The need for blood is cons tant. Every day, Red Cross must collect more than 600 pints of blood to meet patients' needs in Oregon, Washington, and southeast Alaska. Volun teer blood donors are the sole source of this lifesaving gift. Because w hole blood is separated and transfused as components, just one blood donation can help up to four ill or injured people.
