Letter to the Editor
Please slow down
To the Editor:
When we speak of making
our streets safer for our
children, what often comes to
mind is ridding the streets of
criminals, drug dealers and
gang activities. Our communi
ty may not have a large
presence of such activities, but
our streets are in no way safe
for our kids. Maybe we are tak
ing our rural lifestyle for
granted. Maybe we enjoy cer
tain freedoms not readily ap
parent in larger cities. The
grave reality is that someone,
most likely a child, is going to
be seriously injured, if not kill
ed, by those of us wrho fail to
take the speed limit in town
seriously.
I live on Court Street be
tween the courthouse and
fairgrounds and have witness
ed on many occasions people
abusing the speed limit. This is
obviously not a problem
specific to Court Street, but is
found on all streets in town.
But what is extremely ag
gravating is the close proximi
ty to the schools. If we fail to
see the importance of slowing
down near schools, then how
will we see to slow down
elsewhere?
The problem drivers are not
only teenagers as one might ex
pect, but almost everyone on
occasion has entered the realm
of recklessness in regards to
speeding in town. Cars,
pickups, log trucks, farm
trucks, and multiple vehicles
such as pickups pulling horse
trailers are all guilty. We must
all stop and think how quickly
accidents happen versus the
time it takes to stop a loaded
truck, car or pickup going 40
miles per hour on narrow
streets. I've witnessed a close
call involving a truck, a child
and a tennis ball and hate to
think about what could have
been the outcome.
I think we should all accept
the challenge of making our
streets safe for our kids by
teaching safe and responsible
driving habits, as well as being
safe and responsible drivers
ourselves. Finally, I challenge
the local police departments
and city officials to take actions
that will reduce the dangerous
conditions on our streets. Isn't
it easier to ask what can we do
than to ask what should we
have done? Please slow down.
Sincerely,
(s) Craig Gutierrez

There's a treat for all ages
coming to Heppner this Sun
day. At 2 p.m. at the Elemen
tary School Gym, the North
west Senior Theater will pre
sent “ Thanks For The
M em ories,“ a USO show
featuring music from the 40's.
There's nothing like music to
take you back in time and to
give you an opportunity to
share the past with your
children and grandchildren. In
conjunction with the musical
presentation, be sure to stop by
the Morrow County Museum
to view the Smithsonian travel
ing exhibit: "Produce for Vic
tory: Posters on the American
Home Front, 1941-1945." Sup
port this endeavor by the Mor
row County Museum, an hour
and a half of music for the
bargain price of $3. Many be
moan the fact that there is a
shortage of culture in Heppner.
When we support these oppor
tunities, the need becomes ob
vious. Success stories result in
more events coming to Hepp
ner. See you there.
Speaking of events to attract
people, the North Central
Regional Strategies Tourism

Next week, the Chamber
program will be Rick Minster
discussing the Morrow Coun
ty Unified Recreation District.
Thought for the week: "Life
is mostly a matter of jumping
in feet first, here I come, ready
or not!"
HCC to meet
The Heppner Coordinating
Council will hold its regularly
scheduled meeting, Tuesday,
May 23, at 7:30 a.m., at the
GEODC office. Issues of in
terest to be discussed will in
