The lone Cardinals won the
Big Sky Conference, District 3
1A track and field champion­
sh ip s at H erm iston High
School last Saturday, May 6.
lone boys beat Wasco County
for first with 136 points to 120.
TJie girls won 11 of 17 events
for their championship.
"We had a pretty good day,"
said coach Del LaRue. "About
80 percent of the kids had their
best of the year." The girls
1600m relay team has the best
qualifying time in the state.
Melissa McElligott won three
titles, the 100, 200 and long
jump to lead the team.
Becky Wagenblast won the
high jump competition and
Anne Dombrowski took the
400. Other state contenders in­
cluded Kara Miller in the 100
high hurdles and second place
in the intermediate hurdles.
Teammate Stephanie Hague-
wood beat Miller for first in the
intermediate hurdles. LaRee
Anderson took second in the
400 and lone's 1,600 relay team
finished second.
Jerad Ashbeck won the 110
high hurdles while Jacob Taylor
w on the 800 m. N athan
Heideman took two seconds
the triple jum p and high
hurdles, Rob Crums took se­
cond in the 1,500 and the 1,600
relay team also placed second.

LaRue said the biggest competi­
tion for the boys should be
Wallowa and Canyonville Bi­
ble. For the girls it will be Ca­
nyonville Bible and St. Paul.

been having a pretty good year
in tennis. Not only is he going
to the state championships, he
also has not lost any of his 20
matches this year.
Last week at the district
3A/2A/1A tennis tournament in
the Tri-cities Delbart beat Bryan
Escobedo 6-1, 6-4 to win the
boys singles title and advance
to state.

"Thanks for the Memories,"
a music and comedy variety
show based on the USO shows
of World War II, will be
brought to Heppner on May 21
by th e N o rth w est Senior
Theatre, a volunteer theatrical
group composed entirely of
performers over the age of 55.
A rtistic director, Vivian
Lyman of Sylvan says, "C re­
ativity is ageless, and because
of that, we don't feel there are
constraints on us because we're
senior citizens. We believe
senior citizens are a national
treasure, and we're doing our
level best to prove it." The
N orthw est Senior Theatre
creates its own material and has
several shows which it tours in
the northwest.
"Thanks for the Memories"
is coming to Heppner in con­
junction with the "Produce for
state. Michael qualified in two
events.
Dickenson placed first in the
high jump with a jump of 4-ft
10-inches, VanEtta placed in
the 1500 meters and Michael
placed second in the long jump
with a leap of 19-foot 2-inches
and second in the triple jum p
at 39-9.
Rev. Bob D ow rey to retire

The Rev j Bob Dowrey, pastor
at th e H e p p n er U nited
Methodist Church, has an­
nounced his retirement, effec­
tive June 25.
The Rev. Dowrey and his
wife, Cathy, plan to move to
The Dalles.
The Rev. A1 Trachsel, who
has served in Dufur and Tygh
Valley, has been named the
new pastor. Everyone is invited
to meet the Rev. Trachsel and
his family on Sunday, July 2, at
the church.
Mustangs head to district playoffs
The Heppner Mustangs are
making their fourth trip to the
2A district baseball playoffs
under coach Rick Johnston, this
time in the number two spot.
Heppner earned their right to
the playoffs by beating Stan­
field 6-5 in a comeback to win
in the seventh inning game.
Heppner had to win one of
the two games played Tuesday,
May 16 and lost the first one
with lots of errors and had just
about as many in the second
game.
They pulled it off however in
the last inning, two outs, bases
loaded, tying run at bat, every
baseball players dream. Chad

well at the Redmond High
School Rodeo, held May 13-14.
Tiffanie Munkers, Lexington,
won the all-around champion­
ship and placed third in goat
tying, fourth in poles and fifth
in barrel racing.
Katie McCoin, Condon, plac­
ed first in poles and fourth in
team roping.
Lexi Matteson, H eppner,
placed fourth in barrel racing
and sixth in team roping.
Justin Matteson, Heppner,
placed first in calf roping,
fourth in team roping, and fifth
in bull dogging.

day, May 21, at 2 p.m. There
will be a $3 charge for all seats.

dation. The Northwest Senior
Theatre particularly encourages
senior citizens who remember
World War II and the spirit and
music that rose out of it to share
this experience with younger
friends and family members,
said Marsha Sweek, museum
director.
