Estrogen-Replacement
May Aid Memory
Menopause is a medical term
that refers to the ending of ovula
tion and monthly menstrual peri
ods in women. While this event
occurs most often between the ages
of 40 and 50, it can happen as late
as age 60. According to Family
M edical Guide published by the
American Medical Association,
about 25 percent of women reach
menopause without any symptoms,
except cessation of menstrual peri
ods. About 50 percent experience
mild mental and physical changes.
The remaining 25 percent experi
ence more significant physical
symptoms such as hot flashes,
sweating, headaches, joint pain,
and vaginal dryness. Mental
changes include sleep distur
bances, depression, anxiety, irri
tability, difficulty concentrating,
and memory loss.
Estrogen replacement corrects
many symptoms experienced dur
ing and after menopause. Studies
indicate that estrogen provides
other benefits such as reducing the
risk of osteoporosis and heart at
tacks. According to an article in the
medical journal Obstetrics andGy-
necology, another possible benefit
of estrogen has been discovered. In
a study of 71 healthy women who
had recently experienced meno
pause, those receiving estrogen
replacement had significantly
higher scores on tests for verbid
memory skills than women who
did not receive estrogen.
