Lady Cards capture district crown lone defeated by Wasco, beat Echo

The lone lady Cardinals rac­
ed to their third consecutive
district crow n on Friday,
Feruary 17, by downing the
Wasco County Redsides 52-33.
This was also the third year
lone has played Wasco for the
title.
The Cardinals used solid
defense in building a comman­
ding 16-4 first quarter lead and
never looked back, as they con­
tinued to dominate all aspects
of the game all four quarters.
The lady Cardinals shot a
blazing 48 percent from the
floor and 67 percent from the
charity stripe. Kim Bedortha
led the team with six assists,
followed by Melissa McElligott
with four. Suzy Heideman put
forth a solid defensive effort on
the interior by holding their
leading scorer to only four field
goals. Sound back court defen­
sive pressure by Becky Wagen-
blast and Mary Jane McCarty
helped create 23 turnovers by
the Redsides, to Keep them off
balance at the offensive end.

Sherman County's strong
Huskies out muscled the Hepp­
ner Fillies Saturday, Feb. 18 in
Moro, as the Huskies held on
to first place in the CBC with a
63 61 victory.
The Fillies came out cold in
the first quarter and scored 14
to the Huskies 22 points. Sher­
man built on the lead in the se­
cond quarter going into the
locker room up 10, 35-25.
The Fillies ate away at the
Huskies lead making a com­
eback ending the third quarter
46-53.
Heppner pulled to within
two points in the final minutes
and looked like they had a
chance to tie the game when a
questionable call on Kelsie
Evans was called for traveling,
giving the Huskies back the
ball. The Fillies were forced to
foul and Marilee Coelsch, who
hadn't been hitting them, sunk
all four.
Kelsie Evans led all scorers
with 32 points while Lori
Moeller added 10 for the Fillies.
Coelsch put in 23 for Sher­
man and Tyan Sanderson add­
ed 13.

The lone Cardinal boys were
handed a 57-40 defeat by the
Wasco Co. Redsides at the 1A
District 3 Tournament Friday,
Feb. 17 in Hermiston, but
bounced back to beat the Echo
Cougars 80-66 and claim a spot
in the State Tournament March
1-4 in Baker City.
The Redsides played a better
game and simply took the Car­
dinals out of the offense that
the Cardinal boys like to play.
The Cardinal boys were forc­
ed to face the Echo Cougars
Saturday, Feb. 18, for a third
time this year. Coach Del
LaRue w'as very pleased with
the boys' response towards
their loss the previous day.
"T h e kids played with an at­
titude of, 'that was yesterday
and this is today' and really
played the best four quarter
game of their season."
Everyone had a good game,
said LaRue, and Marc Orem, a
freshman, had an exceptional
game with 18 points and three
rebounds. Thierry Delbart had
12 points, Jerad Ashbeck had 17
points and seven rebounds,
Steve Allen finished with 11
and six assists, w'hile Luke
Swanson scored 10 points.
lone Cardinal boys will travel
to Baker City for state tourna­
ment action. The Cardinals will
go head to head against the
Paisley Mustangs, on Wednes­
day, March 1. Tip off will be at
3 p.m. in the Baker City High
School gym.

The Heppner Fillies earned a
spot in the 2A district playoffs
by beating the Pilot Rock
Rockets 53-22 on the Fillies
home court Friday, Feb. 17.
The Fillies, coached by Mark
Dowdy, hit the boards hard
pulling down 18 offensive re­
bounds and 30 defensive
boards. Lori Moeller was strong
on the boards grabbing 10
while Rondi Robinson pulled
down nine.
CBC leading scorer Kelsie
Evans led the Fillies with 22
points. Char Coe put in 12 and
grabbed eight rebounds.
The Fillies came out fired up
and ready to win as they led
the first half 24-14. Heppner
held Pilot Rock to just eight se­
cond half points while they put
in for 29.
