School board takes no action on request to reverse 7-12 configuration
The Morrow County School
Board, at its regular meeting
Feb. 13, took no action on a re
quest from a Heppner delega
tion to reverse its decision to
implement a grade 7-12 facility
at Heppner High School. The
board earlier voted to move
grades seven and eight, now
located at Heppner Middle
School, up to Heppner High
School as a money saving
measure.
Morrow County School Sup
erintendent Chuck Starr an
nounced that the district would
have to cut 25 teaching posi
tions county-wide in order to
cope with the results of Ballot
Measure 5 and the school fun
ding formula, which would in
crease funds to poorer districts
and reduce funds for districts
spending more per pupil.
Starr had earlier estimated
that five teaching positions
would be cut from Heppner
High School and Heppner
Middle School.
He said however, that if the
school bond measure passes, 14
teaching positions could be
reinstated.
The specific cuts and teach
ing positions eliminated will be
announced at a budget commit
tee work session at Sam Board-
man Elementary Monday, Feb.
27, at 7:30 p.m..
Starr said that the entire co-
curricular program at Morrow
County schools will also be cut
from the budget for the next
two years. This action would
elim
inate funding for all extra
curricular activities, such as
Outdoor School, sports, music
and band trips and clubs.
Starr and the board indicated
their support for the proposed
co-curricular district, planned
for a county-wide vote May 16,
which would provide funding
for extra curricular activities. All
the cities of the county must
opt in the district. However,
the city of Boardman has put
off a decision concerning the
district until a Feb. 21 hearing.
The cities of Heppner, Lex
ington and Irrigon earlier opted
in the district. The city of lone
unanimously approved the
district at a meeting Feb. 7 after
earlier splitting 3-3 on the issue.
In other business, the board:
-learned of candidates for the
March election: zone 3, John
R ietm ann; zone 4, Tom
McElligott and Russell Morgan;
and zone 5, Scott Johnson;
-approved resignations from
Anne Bedortha from her posi
tion as assistant custodian,
laundry and bus driver at lone;
and Julie Errend, north end bus
driver;
-approved employment of
Trina Hellberg for a temporary
teaching contract to teach social
studies at Columbia Junior
High, replacing Jerry Martin;
and Michael Yates, temporary
teaching contract as counselor
for A.C. Houghton Elementary
and Sam Boardman Elemen
tary, replacing Susan Baker;

The term arthritis refers to
“joint inflammation.” The most
common types of arthritis are
osteoarthritis and rheumatoid
arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis
typically causes morning stiff
ness (for 30 minutes to an hour);
inflamed, swollen, and tender
joints (wrists and finger joints
are most likely to be affected);
afternoon fatigue; and weight
loss. Osteoarthritis, a degenera
tion of the joints, causes less
joint inflammation. Morning
stiffness lasting less than 30 min
utes may, however, be a prob
lem. Pain is the earliest symp
tom of osteoarthritis.
Non-drug treatments may
provide relief from arthritis
symptoms. Many persons re
spond to applied heat. Hot baths,
hot water bottles, heating pads,
or warm compresses may reduce
pain and stiffness. A correct mix
of rest and exercise may be ben
eficial. Moderate exercise, such
as walking or swimming, helps
keep joints from becoming stiff
and from losing range of motion.
Too much exercise, however, can
damage joint tissue.

tis medicines include acetami
nophen, aspirin, naproxen, and
ibuprofen. Topical liniments
containing methyl salicylate and
other ingredients also may pro
vide joint pain relief. Prevent
burns/blistering by not using lini
ments at the same time heating
