Scales draws on research in fields as diverse as history, An thropology, literature, folklore and the visual arts to tease out the story of an object that has held human fascination for thousands of years. He begins with myths that date back to the Iron Age and traces the tale through the Arthurian legends to the present. Along the way he touches on Christian faith, the poetry of Alfred, Lord Ten nyson, and the psychology of Carl Jung. It is a story full of romantic idealism and dedica tion to a quest that seems more important than life itself. returns to H eppner for perform ance Finally Scales points out the relevance of these ancient strands of myth for life in the last years of the 20th century.
