Actor and scholar, Keith
Scales, will be in Heppner on
Sunday, February 26, to pre
sent another Oregon Chautau
qua program. This time the
theme is the complex of
legends surrounding the Grail.
Scales draws on research in
fields as diverse as history, An
thropology, literature, folklore
and the visual arts to tease out
the story of an object that has
held human fascination for
thousands of years. He begins
with myths that date back to
the Iron Age and traces the tale
through the Arthurian legends
to the present. Along the way
he touches on Christian faith,
the poetry of Alfred, Lord Ten
nyson, and the psychology of
Carl Jung. It is a story full of
romantic idealism and dedica
tion to a quest that seems more
important than life itself.
returns to H eppner for perform ance
Finally Scales points out the
relevance of these ancient
strands of myth for life in the
last years of the 20th century.
Keith Scales is involved in
the theater in Portland. He has
performed and directed many
well received productions for
the stage, television and radio.
In addition he finds time to
research and speak on literary
topics for the Oregon Human
ities Council. Some in Heppner
will remember his talk in 1993
on Irish poet, William Butler
Yeats.
The 2 p.m. talk at the Mor
row County Museum is spon
sored by Oregon Trail Library
and is made possible by a grant
from the Oregon Humanities
Council, an affiliate of the Na
tional Endowment for the
Humanities. Admission is free
of charge, and the public is
welcome.

Dr. David Hall, agricultural
science and technology instruc
tor at Crook County High
School was recently featured in
the National Association of Col
leges and Teachers of
Agriculture Journal. He is the
son of Gene and Harriet Hall,
Heppner.
The article gave favorable
review to a video tape he co
developed while on the agricul
tural education faculty at The
Pennsylvania State University.
The tape, titled “From Farm to
Food", was developed along
with an instructional packet of
activities and projects to be in
corporated into lessons design
ed to study food and where it
comes from. The package
focuses on the top contribu
tions of food made by Penn
sylvania agriculture. The pro
gram was designed specifical
ly for elementary students but
may serve older clientele as
well.
One of the other developers
in the project was Hall's oldest
daughter Jodi Brown, who is
also in agricultural education.
Tree pruning
clinic slated
Healthy trees contribute
greatly to the quality of life in
eastern Oregon, says Carol
M ichael-Bennett, Morrow
County Extension agent. If
trees are taken for granted,
they may receive too little care
or are damaged by inappro
priate practices.
Two basic tree pruning work
shop for homeowners will be
conducted in Morrow County
in February. The workshops
will be conducted by the
Oregon
Department
of
Forestry, in cooperation with
the Morrow County Extension
Service, and the cities of Board-
man and Irrigon.
The first clinic will be offered
in Irrigon, February 22, at 2
p.m. The location will be the
training room of the Irrigon Fire
Hall, which is at the intersec
tion of Northeast 7th and north
Main, across from the Irrigon
City Park.
The Boardman clinic will be
held February 23, and begin at
2:30 p.m. at the Oregon Trail
Library, 201 1st NW, Boardman
(old US Bank Building).
The Oregon Department of
Forestry will begin both pro
grams with an audio-visual
presentation, then take par
ticipants to city property for a
''h a n d s-o n '' pruning ex
perience. Participants should
be prepared with appropriate
outdoor clothing.
There is no cost to attend this
free educational program.
Participants will learn: proper
tree care; the dangers of topp
ing trees; how to have the best
looking
trees
in
the
neighborhood, and correct
pruning techniques. A similar
program is scheduled in Hepp
ner March 23, at a location and
time to be determined. For in
formation about the Basic Tree
Pruning for Homeowners in
these communities, contact the
Morrow County Extension Ser
vice, 1 800 342-3664.
