Horse race turns into OT for lone

The Cardinal fans and the
Helix Grizzlies fans went to a
basketball game and ended up
watching a horse race Satur­
day, Feb. 4 in lone. The Cards
won 85-84 in a last minute over­
time buzzer shot.
lone Cards made a slow start
but shortly began to pace
themselves with the Grizzlies
point for point.
In the second half, Cardinals
were in the lead once, but
again, by the fourth quarter
both teams were running neck
and neck to end in a tie.
In overtime the Grizzlies took
the lead by two and the Car­
dinals answered with a buzzer
beater three pointer put up by
junior Luke Swanson. "It was
a heck of a game,'' said coach
Del LaRue. "The Grizzlies
played very well and it could
have went either way.”
Thierry Delbart scored 28
points, Jared Ashbeck had 18,
Luke Swanson 14, Steve Allen
13 and Nathan Heideman 10,
for the Cards. The whole team
played well, added LaRue.
There was great support from
the Cardinal bench and the
Cardinal fans.
Both games over the week­
end were important for the
Cards to win to be in standing
for a chance to play in the
district tournament. lone plays
at Echo on February 10.

Fillies clobber Umatilla 63-49
The Heppner Fillies grabbed
44 rebounds to Umatilla's 24
beating the Vikings 63-49 last
Saturday, Feb. 4 in Heppner.
The Vikings stayed with the
Fillies for three quarters with
the score tied at the end of the
third 38-38.
Kelsie Evans scored 10 of her
game high 28 points in the
fourth to lead the Filly charge.
Char Coe put in 14 while she
and jenny Krein each grabbing
11 rebounds. Krein also had
five assists and two steals. Ron-
di Robinson finished the game
with 11 points for the Fillies.
Julie Bredemeier scored 14
points for the Vikings.
Heppner plays in Athena Fri­
day, Jan. 10 and then returns
home Saturday, Jan. 11 to play
Stanfield.

Lady Cards defeat Blue Devils

The lady Cardinals came out
and set the pace against the
Condon Blue Devils last Friday
night, Feb. 3 in lone, and cruis­
ed to a 55-38 victory.
In the first quarter the Cards
surged to a 15-7 lead. The se­
cond quarter the Cardinals
stretched their lead to 10 more
points early on, but watched
their lead disappear, to fall
behind by one at halftime.
The lady Cards picked up
their defense and held Condon
to just 13 second half points.
The lady Cardinals made 25
out of 64 attempts from the
floor for 39 percent and three
out of nine from the charity
stripe for 33 percent. The pass­
ing and assist attack was lead
by Mary Jane McCarty and
Melissa McElligott with four
each. Anne Dombrowski lead
the team on the boards with
nine rebounds. McElligott lead
the scoring column with 20
points. Dom browski and
McCarty each had 10 points
apiece.

H eppn er's full pressure
defense stymied the Wahtonka
Eagles Friday, Jan 3 in The
Dalles as the Fillies blew them
away 52-30.
The bench did good work for
coach Mark Dowdy as all but
two Fillies scored for Heppner.
Anji Bergstrom led the team
in rebounds with nine and had
four assists. Kelsie Evans led in
the scoring department with 23
points. Lori Moeller grabbed
eight boards.
Wahtonka was led by Jen­
nifer Caldwell with nine points.

The Heppner Mustangs came
closer to victory than they have
in quite a while, but poor
shooting down the stretch left
the home team out, and the
win in Umatilla's hands Satur­
day night.
The Mustangs came back
from a 19-29 halftime deficit to
pull even at 39 all, shortly into
the fourth quarter, but cold
shooting by Heppner allowed
the Vikings to seal the win at
57-48.
The Mustangs out rebound­
ed the Vikings 39-33, but
shooting percentages told the
story. The Mustangs shot a low
26 percent from the floor to
Umatilla's 40 percent, and 43
from the free throw line to the
Viking's 73 percent from the
stripe.
