Pat Sweeney, nearby resi
dent, was the first to drive
across newly completed south
Court St. Bridge recently.
Work has been completed on
the south Court Street Bridge
in Heppner. The project was
started around Oct. 1 and was
completed and open for traffic
Wed., Dec. 28.
The new concrete bridge
replaced a 1948 wooden struc
ture which had begun to
deteriorate. The bridge, com
plete with railing and a new en
try angle on to Court Street,
was a state project and cost
around $250,000. The city's
portion of the project was
$25,000, which was funded
through a grant.
Heppner city manager Gary
Marks says that state workers
will return to seed the dirt
around the bank by the bridge.
He says that the city is also try
ing to get the state to put up
screening around the opening
of the culvert. "The city is con
cerned about the opening to the
culvert," said Marks. "They
think it represents a hazard to
children." Marks says the city
fears that children may be
tempted to walk along the edge
and could fall into the creek
and be injured.
A request by Linda Dutcher
for a guardrail behind her
house was rejected by the state
following a visit by a state safe
ty inspector. The bridge comes
out on Court St. directly facing
the Dutchers' back yard and
the Dutchers feared that
vehicles could crash into their
yard.

a presentation is that the 4-H'er
learns the most because they
are teaching. It's a proven fact
that we remember 90 percent of
what we say as we do, says a
press release from the Morrow
County Extension office.
The easiest way to learn how
to do a presentation is to attend
"Speakeasy" field day. This
workshop is filled with ac
tivities that will help a person
overcome their fear of speaking
in public. "W e'll play games,
watch sample presentations,
and use fun kits to practice
creating presentations," said a
spokesperson.
'Speakeasy" will be held Fri
day, January 27 at Riverside
High School, Boardman. The
field day is scheduled from 9:30
a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Participants
should bring a sack lunch
because they will be working
during the lunch hour. Car
pooling with friends would add
to the fun, continued the
spokesperson.
An advanced workshop,
Speakeasy II, for graduates of
past Speakeasy field days and
for members who have given
presentations at fair or in club
meetings will be held in Hepp
ner, February 10.
Many Morrow County Rodeo
contestants have done excep
tionally well this fall and winter
around the Northwest. In the
Greater Columbia Barrel Racing
Assn, year end standings
Angela Munkers of Lexington
won first place and a new sad
dle. Her sister, Tiffanie won se
cond place. In the open divi
sion, Randi Britt of Buttercreek
took first place and a new sad
dle. Kelly Currin of Heppner
and Janice Davis of Hermiston
placed second and third respec
tively. In the $500 novice horse,
Lisanne Currin of Heppner was
fourth, Mary Ann Munkers,
Lexington, was fifth and Heidi
Lane, Boardman was sixth.
Mary Ann Munkers and
Lisanne Currin recently com
peted in a Barrel Racing Futuri

Osoyoos, B.C. They placed
fifth and sixth respectively. Kel
ly Currin just returned home
from Oklahoma City where she
competed in a barrel racing
futurity.
Three Morrow County team
ropers qualified and competed
in the United States Team Rop
ing National Finals held in
Guthrie, Ok. They were John
Moyer and Justin Matteson of
Heppner and Tom Martin of
Lexington.
Tiffanie Munkers recently
won the Reserve all-around
championship and first in the
goat tying with an 8.5 at
Klamath Falls High School
rodeo. Justin and Lexi Mat
teson and Katie McCoin of
Condon also competed and
placed well in their events. The
Heppner-Condon High School
Rodeo club is doing very well
in state standings.
At the Palmer-Smith winter
series held in Walla Walla, WA.
Dec. 10, Janice Davis placed
third and Mary Anp Munkers
was fourth in the Open Barrel
Racing.
Congratulations to Butch
Knowles of Heppner for
another outstanding job of
commentating all 10 perfor
mances for ESPN at the Na
tional Finals Rodeo in Las
Vegas, Nevada.
The Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo
committee is busy planning
next year's county and pro
rodeo's. They are also planning
a team roping and barrel racing
on Sunday of the St. Patrick's
celebration. It is open to
anyone who wants to enter.
More information will be
forthcoming.

New Year's Resolution: I will
limit the length of this column.
Hopefully that won't be like the
diet resolutions that last at least
one hour. Happy New Year.
The new year in Heppner
means it's Town & Country
time. Everyone is invited to
participate in the day and even
ing activities. Traditionally, this
is the day and evening that our
community volunteers are
honored, as well as the Rodeo
Queen and Court. All entities
are working together to make
it an informative day and enter
taining for one and all. The chef
for the Oregon Beef Council
will be preparing the evening
meal and Steve Amen, Oregon
Public Broadcasting Oregon
Field Guide, is guest speaker.
See other articles in the Gazette
for further information. Join the
Chamber at noon for French
dip sandwiches and salads and
be sure to obtain your banquet
tickets early at the Chamber,
Bank of Eastern Oregon, Mur
ray Drugs or Morrow County
Grain Growers. "H ats Off"
aw ards, Fish & Wildlife
awards, installation of officers
and "som e words from the
chef" will be the noon agenda.
Come and enjoy.
There will not be Chamber
on Tuesday, Jan. 10, because of
all the activités Wednesday,
Jan. 11.

Sixty-five students at Blue
Mountain Community College
received a perfect 4.0 grade
point average during fall term.
This reflects a straight A report
in all courses taken by the
student.
Seventy students qualified
for the president's list by attain
ing a GPA of 3.85 or better.
One hundred tw enty-five
students qualified for the
dean's list by receiving a GPA
of 3.4 to 3.84 and 145 students
were named to the fall term
honor roll by receiving a GPA
of 3. to 3.39.
To earn a position on any of
the three lists, a student must
have carried a fulltime load of
classes, which translates to 12
graded credit hours. Students
may not have received an F in
any class to be so honored. A
pass grade does not count
toward the 12 graded hours
necessary to be included on the
lists.
Following are students nam
ed to the honors list:
