The Riverside Pirates gained

The Pirates counted on Kar-
dan Young to put up some
numbers, and the 6-foot-3
senior scored 17 points and
snagged 12 rebounds to lead
Riverside to the win.
Aaron Keizur, the Pirates big
6-foot-9 post man was held to
only 12 points, but it w asn't
enough to stop the Pirates from
avenging an earlier loss to the
Mustangs at Heppner.
The first quarter was an of
fensive nightm are for the
Mustangs, who could only
manage three points in the first
eight minutes.
Things got a little better in the
second q u a rte r, and the
Mustangs only trailed Riverside
16-18 at the end of the half.
Heppner came out after the
break with a big third quarter
putting up 16 points and tak
ing the lead 32-29, but it wasn't
enough of a cushion when the
P irates knocked dow n a
23-point barrage to H eppner's
only 15 in the fourth period to
take the lead and the win.
Eric Schonbachler and Chris
Sykes led the Mustang scoring,
knocking down 12 apiece.

Alcohol And Heart *
Attack Prevention
Alcohol use and abuse is con
sidered the major cause of some of
the nation’s most serious problems.
The list of problems resulting from
excess alcohol use includes family
neglect and abuse, homicides, au
tomobile accidents, and injuries.
Surprising to many, however, re
searchers have found a beneficial
effect from the intake o f moderate
amounts o f alcohol.
The benefit discovered is a re
duction in the risk of heart attacks.
According to a recent issue of the
Journal o f American Medical A s
sociation, consumption o f one
ounce or less of alcohol a day may
cut heart attack risk by as much as
40 percent. Alcohol seems to boost
levels of a naturally occurring en
zyme called .issue plasminogen
activator. This enzyme breaks up
blood clots in the body. A geneti
cally prepared form of the enzyme
is used by injection in hospital set
tings to dissolve clots located in
the heart. Alcohol also tends to
increase levels of HDL cholesterol
in the body. HDL is the “good
cholesterol" that seems to protect
us from heart disease.
Many physicians are reluctant
to recommend alcohol for fear of
its addicting and destructive ef
fects. And most physicians feel
that complete abstinence from al
cohol is best for persons with liver
or pancreatic disease or congestive
heart failure.
