Allergic Reactions
Affecting the Eyes
An allergy is a reaction to an
environmental substance or irri
tant by the body’s immune sys
tem. Allergic reactions, depend
ing on their severity, may cause
runny nose, watery and red eyes,
itching and inflamed skin, sinus
stuffiness, swollen mouth or
throat, headache, and difficult
breathing. Eye drop medicines
can help people cope with eye
allergies.
Artificial tears help wash
foreign materials out of the eyes.
Preservative-free artificial tears
will help relieve dry eyes, a prob
lem in about a third of persons
who experience allergies.
D econgestant eye d ro p s
skrink swollen blood vessels in
the eye and help remove eye red
ness. Mild over-the-counter de
congestants typically contain less
than one percent of phenyl
ephrine, naphazoline, oxymeta-
zoline, or similar medicines. De
congestant eye drops are com
bined with astringents such as
zinc sulfate and antihistamines
such as pheniramine. Both are
useful in controlling itching.
Other eye medicines include
mast cell stabilizers such as
lodoxamide which help control
the release of histamine from
certain body cells. Nonsteroidal
antiflam m atory agents such as
ketorolac are approved to con
trol itching associated with sea
sonal allergies.

organizing for th e 1995 A uc
tion. D oris B rosnan a n d John
a n d A n n M urray will co-chair
th e com m ittee. The auction is
th e m ain fund source for the St.
P a tric k 's D ay C e le b ra tio n .
A lthough St. P atrick's Day
w o u ld r o t be possible w ith o u t
th e dedicated efforts of m any
v olunteers, several th o u sa n d
dollars are required each year
to cover expenses for publicity,
b rochures, e n tertain m en t and
facilities rentals.

ing decorations, o r collecting
food for oth ers less fortunate,
and be realistic in w hat you can
reasonbably accom plish. For
children, th e process is as im
portant as the finished product.

Save c h ild ren 's artw ork a n d
help th em to construct a scrap
book. Ask children to dictate a
story about th e doings of a

tated story into a gift book.
Bake som e special cookies
together or frost a n d decorate
store-bought cookies an d w rap
th em festively. O r purchase a
sm all h o u sep lan t a n d help the
child p u t it in a decorated
container.

But in to d a y 's atm o sp h ere of

high p ressu re advertising, fin

value can be a challenge. A
general guideline is to select
play m aterials th at encourage
children to solve problem s and
use their im agination. D o n 't
overlook collecting materials for
a play kit: a little suitcase filled
with dress-up clothes; a sew ing
kit w ith blunt plastic needles,
large-m esh screen, and colored
yam s; or a carpentry kit w ith
pieces of soft pine a n d real
tools. A nd if children receive a
great m any gifts, p u t som e
aw ay to bring o ut at a later
tim e.
