M C G G sees growth last year
Morrow County Grain
Growers manager Larry Mills
credited expanded marketing
and diversification for the con
tinued improvements in earn
ings for the co-op, despite a
shrinking customer base in the
county.
Speaking at the co-ops an
nual meeting Monday night,
Mills said the nearly $200,000
improvement in profits over
last year were due to "an ex
cellent crop in 1993 and increas
ed market penetration in our
farm supply and fertilizer
departments." The co-op has
expanded its sales into sur
rounding counties to anywhere
from 30 to 50 percent of its fer-
tilzer, parts and equipment
sales, and grain handling come
from outside Morrow County.
"W e had an excellent year,
the second highest in company
history," Mills told the large
crowd gathered at the
fairgrounds in Heppner for the
annual meeting.
Mills said before the Conser
vation Reserve Program went
into effect and took 25 percent
of the farmland out of produc
tion in Morrow County, it was
predicted the county would
drop from 176 farm operations
to 135 by the end of CRP. Mills
pointed out that there are now
only 100 farms left in operation.
"W e have been trying to in
crease our market share and we
have done that. We have gone
out into other counties and
done very well."
MCGG accountant Steve
Green agreed with Mills saying
that the overall financial condi
tion of the co-op is "very
sound".
Every department at the co
op showed increases in income
and profit last year, including
the grain department, farm
supply, and fertilizer depart
ments.
A change in accounting pro-
ceedure wrote off almost
$300,000 in profits for 1994,
however, before the change the
co-op showed profits of
$569,911, up from 379,333 in
1993.
Also part of the meeting was
election of new directors.
Elected were: Tom Currin,
George Miller, Barry Munkers
and Larry Palmer. Elected to
associate directors were: John
Luciani, Gerald Hoeft, Brian
Thompson and Travis Har
rison.
