beauty rest" outfit won the
"C at's Meow" award; and
Irene Plocharsky from Murray
Drug took the "M cGruff's
Choice" award with her rag
doll costume.

as the Chamber dog and cat
roamed the downtown area
judging costumes.

met at the social rooms of the
St. Williams Catholic Church
Oct. 26 with Rose Baker and
Eunice McElligott as hostesses.
Baker showed a video of the
Panama Canal which was
opened to shipping in 1914.
This is recognized as the 8th
wonder of the modern world
and is known as the greatest
earth moving project ever at
tempted. It is controlled by a
board of four U.S. members
and five Republic of Panama
members at no cost to the
taxpayers.
On Dec. 31,1999, control will
be turned over to Panama. It is
unique in that there are two
parallel waterways that allow
ships through the locks and
there may be four to seven
needed, according to the size of
the ship.
Library hours for November
will be Monday and Wednes
day afternoon and Friday from
1-2 p.m instead of Wednesday
evening. Story-telling will be
the first Tuesday for four year-
olds at 10:30 a.m. and the se
cond Wednesday for three
year-olds at the same time.

discussed future plans, and
heard reports about the recent
W estern Regional M aster
Gardener Conference at their
quarterly meeting held Oct.
27 at Country Flowers in
Condon.
Newly elected officers are
Gail Hughes, Heppner, presi
dent; Phil Emert, Pendleton,
vice-President; and Karen
Peterson, Condon, secretary-
treasurer.
Youth education was one of
the topics discussed for future
projects in Heppner. It was
noted that Master Gardeners
Sharon Hamner and Peterson
are presently operating a junior
gardeners' club in Condon.
Other projects suggested in
cluded "gleaning” for the
hungry,
developing
a
"n a tu re s ca p e " patch that
would display native plants,
and a plant sale as a fundraiser.
Emert, Hughes and John
Murray, Heppner, attended
the three-day Master Gardener
conference at the Airport Holi
day Inn in Portland. They
noted that about 500 gardeners
from a dozen western states at
tended the series of educational
workshops, displays, and
tours.
They were especially im
pressed with the wide range of
activities that are being tackled
by master gardeners around
the country.
Master Gardeners besides
Hughes, Murray, Peterson,
Hamner and Emert are Cor-
rinne Miles, Kay Proctor, Cathy
Dowrey, and Cecil Rill, all of
Heppner; Mary Ellen Coleman
and Elaine Vandecar of Irrigon;
and Susan Stahl of Hermiston.

supported by the Morrow

the
