What To Do About
Bed-Wetting
Bed-wetting (the medical term
is nocturnal enuresis) is a com
mon occurrence among small chil
dren that usually is outgrown by
the age of 5 or 6. The problem is
slightly more common in boys. The
exact cause of bed-wetting is not
always easy to determine. One
cause is genetics or heredity. Stud
ies have shown than children of
one parent, who was a bed-wetter
as a child, have a 44 percent chance
of wetting the bed. This percentage
jumps to over 75 percent if both
parents were bed-wetters. Some
authorities believe that there can
be psychological reasons for this
problem. Physical causes for bed
wetting including structural defects
in the urinary tract at the time of
birth, infection, diabetes, and a
deficiency of a substance in the
body called antidiuretic hormone.
Non-drug approaches to child
hood bed-wetting include use of an
alarm clock that is set for the middle
of the night, signaling a time for
the child to go to the bathroom;
moisture-initiated alarm systems
that awaken the child as the child
urinates; and exercises which
strengthen urinary bladder tone.
Two medicines are sometimes pre
scribed for bed-wetting. Imipr-
amine, an antidepressant, is taken
by mouth just before bedtime. The
second medicine, desmopressin
acetate , is used as a nose spray.
Sometimes desmopressin works
where other therapies have failed.

Kill Measure 16
As pharmacists we strongly urge you to vote NO
on Ballot Measure 16 which would reverse more
than 2,000 years of medical tradition by authoriz
ing doctors to prescribe lethal drugs for terminal
ly ill patients and tell them how to commit suicide.
Most terminally ill patients suffer from clinical
depression which can be treated along with effec
tive pain management using modern techniques.
This assisted suicide initiative opens the door
to killing the powerless. In the Netherlands,
assisted suicide and euthanasia (mercy killing) are
tolerated. In 1991 the Dutch government con
ducted a study on the practice of euthanasia.
It concluded that there were more than 1,000 in
voluntary acts of euthanasia, of whom 140 patients
were mentally competent. The Dutch pediatric
association has developed guidelines for killing
severely handicapped newborns. In June the
Dutch Supreme court approved extending
euthanasia to a patient suffering from a mental il
lness. The history of euthanasia is that attempts
to limit it are often useless.
Proponents of this measure insist that this is
voluntary for those who want to use this new legal
option. The danger of this "option" is that it will
become a societal "obligation". Could this "right-
to-die" become the "duty to die"?
Please vote NO on Measure 16. Let the gift of
medicine promote life--not destroy it.
