OSU to honor Smouse and Anderson
Kenneth Smouse, lone, and
Nels Anderson, former Mor
row County Extension agent,
are among those to be honored
as 1994 Diamond Pioneers by
the Oregon State University
College of Agricultural Sciences
on Wednesday, Oct. 19, in
Corvallis.
"T h e Diamond Pioneer
Registry, begun when the col
lege celebrated its 75th anniver
sary, honors those aged 75 and
older for their contributions to
the state's agricultural and
natural resource industries as
well as for service to OSU,
community and state," said
Judy
Modrell,
program
coordinator.
This year, 31 men and
women are to be honored.
Smouse, born and raised in
lone, started farming in 1943
when he returned to the area
after the death of his father,
Henry Smouse. Ken Smouse
had been working as a
hydrologist with the U.S.
G eological Survey after
graduating from OSU.
In addition to farming,
Smouse also inherited his
father's job as secretary of the
Jordan Elevator and chairman
of the Lexington Wind Erosion
District. He served as a direc
tor of the Columbia Basin Elec
tric Cooperative for 33 years.
Smouse is a past president of
the Oregon Wheat Growers
League and a former member
of the Oregon Wheat Commis
sion. He was Morrow County's
Conservation Man of the Year
in 1978. He continues to be ac
tive in the Morrow County
Wheat League and in the lone
Marketing Club.
Anderson, w ho now lives in
Dallas, served as OSU Exten
sion agent in Morrow County
for 20 years, from 1946 until
1966. He spent a short time in
the Linn County Extension of
fice before transferring to th e
Polk County office in 1968. He
retired from the Extension Ser
vice in 1974.
Anderson was cited for his
work with crop and livestock
producers in Morrow and the
other two counties.
