Why Oregonians should vote
YES on Ballot Measure 13
An explanation o f Measure 13: What it will do.
Section 1: Government cannot grant minority status based on homosexuality.
Civil rights laws were created to help disadvantaged minorities compete economically. But according to the Wall Street Journal,
homosexuals as a group already enjoy far greater prosperity than most Americans . Why should homosexuals get special treatment
just because of how they have sex? Besides, most people still consider homosexuality to be wrong. Adding homosexuals to the
list of minorities not only puts government’s stamp of approval on homosexual behavior, but it makes sodomy, lesbianism and
transvestitism equal to being Black or Hispanic. Once we move from natural conditions like skin color to behaviors like cross
dressing as a basis for giving minority benefits, any other behavior group can and will demand special rights. Editor s note. Voting y e s
on 13 puts you in good company. More than 20 years o f polling consistently shows that over 70% o f A mericans think homosexuality is wrong behavior.
Section 2 : Schools cannot promote homosexuality to children.
We’ve all heard horror stories in recent years about kids in school being encouraged to try homosexuality. Thankfully, most teach
ers and staff respect parents’ and students’ rights - but some do not. Oregon’s children deserve an educational experience free
from any sexual promotion, and especially -- in these days of AIDS -- from homosexuality. Ballot Measure 13 will help the good
teachers and administrators in the schools resist the pressure of "gay-rights" activists to inject pro-"gay" curriculum and events into
public-school life. Ballot Measure 13 protects our kids! Editors note: Even if you don't personally have children in school, this is an important reason
to vote YES on 13. Let's give our kids a chance to be kids!
Sub-section 2(a): Government cannot grant homosexual "marriages."
In Hawaii, the "gay-rights" lobby forced the issue on the people of that state. Fortunately the legislature acted quickly and reaf
firmed the traditional union of a man and a woman as the only legal marriage. Now this powerful political movement is looking
for another state to try for homosexual marriages. Ballot Measure 13 will settle this question in favor of traditional marriage.
Editors note: note that this measure does not stop homosexuals from living together — it just preserves the definition o f marriage that we have had since the beginning
o f civilization.
Sub-section 2(b): Jobs protected from decisions based on "non-job" factors.
People should not be fired from their jobs if their private lifestyle choices do not affect their work. That’s why Ballot Measure 13
prohibits government from firing Someone just because they are homosexual. Editors note: It was not necessary fo r the sponsors to put in this
douse. They did it because they don V want homosexuals to be treated unjustly in the workforce.
Sub-section 2(c): Basic Constitutional Rights protected.
Ballot Measure 13 includes an ironclad guarantee of basic civil rights for all Oregonians. Every right we enjoy under the Federal
and State Constitutions is preserved under this measure. Even though the measure stops the promotion of homosexual behavior
to Our kids, homosexuals are respected as fellow citizens. Editors note: Too often people who oppose giving minority status to homosexuals are ac
cused o f taking away existing rights. This clause shows that the sponsors not only want, but insist, that all basic existing rights will be preserved.
Sub-section 2(d): Adult library materials protected.
Some books are just not appropriate for children and the courts have upheld parents’ rights to decide what those books are. But
adult library materials are different. In the spirit of upholding the First Amendment, Ballot Measure 13 protects those materials.
Editors note: Once again, let’s protect the innocence o f our children. Libraries should be "safe havens" for them, not a place for political activists to try and influence
their minds about homosexual issues.
