Letter to the Editor
Diabolical pleasure in Irrigon dashing?
To the Editor:
Ed G lenn's latest tirade
against Irrigon in the Sept. 6
issue of the Hermiston Herlad,
makes one wonder what his
true motive is. It is obvious to
everyone that he is continuing
his efforts to cause contention
between Boardman and Ir
rigon, and now he is trying to
make waves between Irrigon
and lone. His suggestion that
Irrigon would like to see the
lone High School closed in
order to have access to that
money for a high school in Ir
rigon is ludicrous when one
remembers a plan was
presented that would have pro
vided for a high school in Ir
rigon at no additional cost to
the district.
We are fully aware that the
reason we did not get our high
school was political, and not
financial. It should be noted
that lone receives special fun
ding from the state due to their
size and their distance from the
nearest high school. I have
never heard anyone express
anything but admiration for
lone's determination to hang
on to their high school.
Glenn's efforts to create
animosity between Irrigon and
Boardman have not been en
tirely successful. In our bid to
have our high school restored,
one of the best supportive let
ters in the newspapers was by
Jack Palmer, Boardman's city
manager, in which he stated, "I
think 99 percent of the re
sidents in both communities
would support the idea." I
believe Palmer was correct; any
fair-minded citizen in Morrow'
County would have to agree
with him. Of the 780 names on
a petition asking the board to
reinstate Irrigon's high school,
there were signatures from
Boardman, lone, Heppner and
Lexington, as well as Irrigon.
In regard to the bond issue,
if it does go down again, it
won't be because of any
organized attempt in Irrigon to
sink it, but because the majori
ty of the board was insensitive
to the fact that voters sent it to
defeat once, and it was resub
mitted without any effort to
reduce the amount.
Whatever diabolical pleasure
Mr. Glenn derives from his
constant Irrigon bashing,
wouldn't it be a riot if his barbs
w'ere what it took to get our
tow n politically awakened and
motivated, and goad us into the
force we could become in Mor
row County? Keep it up, Ed,
you're probably doing us more
good than you'll ever know.
