Cutting Caffeine Can
Lower Blood Pressure
According to a new study pub
lished in the American Journal of
Cardiology, men who stop drink
ing caffeinated coffee may expe
rience a significant reduction in
blood pressure. The study was
conducted in 186 healthy men who
drank caffeinated coffee. None of
the men were smokers. All of the
men who were placed in a test
group that consumed no coffee for
8 weeks experienced a drop in their
diastolic and systolic blood pres
sure readings.
According to the Handbook of
Nonprescription Drugs, nearly 80
percent of the U.S. adult popula
tion consumes caffeine daily in
beverages (coffee, tea, soft drinks)
and foods such as chocolate prod
ucts. Caffeine is an ingredient in
over-the-counter stimulant medi
cines and some headache products.
The effect of caffeine on the heart
and blood pressure have been de
bated for many years. While it is
true that caffeine causes a release
of substances such as epinephrine
that increase the blood pressure,
research has shown that this in
crease is balanced by a tolerance
that quickly develops. At least one
study shows that the elevated blood
pressure returns tonormal.
However, other studies have
shown that heavy caffeine con
sumption is associated with in
creased heart rate, irregular heart
beats, and coronary heart disease.
