C o m m issio n ’s plan to aid fam ilies
The Morrow County Court
has approved the 1995-97 bien
nial plan for the Morrow Coun
ty Commission on Children
and Families.
According to Dar Merrill, ex
ecutive director of the commis
sion, the plan is the result of a
community mapping process
that identified strengths and
resources within the county, as
well as risks affecting children
and families.
The plan was accomplished
through three surveys, one for
the public, one for businesses
and organizations and a youth
risk behavior survey given to
high school students.
Goals of the plan, in order of
priority, include: reducing child
abuse; decreasing the teenage
pregnancy rate; increasing the
percent of babies born to
mothers receiving adequate
prenatal care; reducing the
juvenile crime rate; increasing
the percent of families who are
able to care for their own
children; decreasing teenage
tobacco, alcohol and drug use;
increasing the percentage of
children entering kindergarten
who meet developmental stan
dards for their age; increasing
the number of child care slots;
increasing the percent of
families living above the federal
poverty line and increasing the
high school graduation rate.
Merrill said that the mapping
process identified many
organizations, institutions and
individuals who are willing to
help and will be brought
together to help achieve those
goals.

Volksport club plans meeting
Outdoor sports have become
increasingly popular in the
local area. For those Heppner
area walking enthusiasts in
terested in forming a Volks
sport Club, a meeting is sche
duled for Thursday, August 11
at 7 p.m. in the conference
room at Columbia Basin Elec
tric Co-op.
Volkssports are non-competi
tive recreational walking or
other events. Anyone can par
ticipate in this family-oriented
activity. The American Volks
sport Association, who sanc
tions these events, notes that
parents sometimes carry in
fants in backpacks or push
children in strollers.
Organizing a local Volkssport
club that contributes to per
sonal physical and mental
fitness, could lead to sponsor
ship of local walkssport events.
Sponsorship and local par
ticipation could increase visitor
activity and provide a
benefit to area merchants.
