Local men battle Grass Valley blaze
Bob Nairns of H eppner.
The H ep p n er volunteer
firemen described the situa
tion at Grass Valley as “ hell,
just chaos", citing organiza
tional problems. They said
that their major objective was
to protect structures from
damage. Helicopters dropped
water on the fire, but the
H eppner firemen credit the
farmers in the area with final
ly stopping the fire. At one
point, they said the fire was
burning a mile in less than
three minutes.
