After a week at Institute for
Cham ber O rganization M an
agem ent in Boulder, Col
orado, my head is swimming
with ideas, action plans, vi
sions, networking all across
th e U n ited S ta te s w ith
chambers with similar focus,
etc. It was refreshing to bo
among 375 people who for the
most part have strong ag
resource ties and whose chief
concern is protecting small
businesses and rural com
m unities much like ours.
Even though many were of a
much larger population, their
challenges were much the
same as ours. For this col
umn, I share the following
class handout:
"It takes two, your Cham ber
of Commerce and You"
Working together can never
be a policy. It can only be an
idea. It can never be a code of
rules. It can only be a way of
looking at the world.
We can say, "th is is m ine"
and be good, or we can add,
"this is 'o u r' and become bet
ters. We can think, "I do my
share" and be satisfied, or we
can ask "can I do more?" and
become prosperous.
We can work alongside
each other and function, or
we can work with each other
and grow. As we have.
O u r c o u n try 's h is to ry
makes it clear that combining
all efforts into one has been
the only way to achieve that
progress and that strength we
take such pride in, pride not
only in what w e've achieved
but pride in knowing that
w e've achieved it together,
with our ow n work and our
own visions. That's really the
key.
Because when all is said and
d o n e , w o rk in g to g e th e r
d o esn 't only bring out the
best in all of us, it brings out
the best in each of us. It takes
two, your chamber of com
merce and you.
Next week: business and
board.
