Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 29, 1994 - THREE Style show planned July 7 Babysitter course completed Students at babysitting class Sixteen future babysitters com­ pleted an eight-hour training course in Heppner on June 20 and 21. The students had ’’hands-on” opportunities to practice making articles for a ’’sitters bag of tricks,” learn basic first aid and when to call for help during medical emergencies, and how to hold and diaper babies. Students also observed toddlers at play, made safe nutritious snacks, learned to build a child’s self esteem, and learned techniques for positive behavior management. The training, coordinated by the 4-H Youth Development pro­ gram, was conducted by local medical personnel and interesed parents. The teaching team in­ cluded George Naims, Sue Thompson, Kathleen Lowe, Kay Proctor, Laura Burnside- McElligott, Dr. Jeanne Berretta and Carol Michael-Bennett. In­ fants and toddlers who helped with the program were Carrie Haguewood, Nicholas Lacey, HHS honor roll students named By Amy Drake, Reporter Thursday June 23, the Sassy Sewers 4-H sewing group went to the Tri-Cities to pick out fabric for their outfits for fair. Those who went were Amy Drake, Brooke Boyer, Macy Rhea and leader Carley Drake. They also looked at ready made garments. Members will meet individually with the leader to make their project. Heppner High School has released its honor roll and honorable mention students for the spring term. Honor Roll students are those whose grade point average falls between 3.33 to 4. Honorable mention grades are from 3 to 3.29. The area serviced by Anne Morter, BMCC South Morrow County coordinator, has been ex­ tended to include all of Morrow County. “ I will be developing classes for fall term during the summer. This will include classes offered in the Boardman and Irrigon areas.” says Morter. "Residents of north Morrow who have specific concerns or class needs are invited to give me a call.” M orter’s phone number is 503/422-7040. She hopes to secure a Boardman phone number over the summer. In the past, a few classes have been offered in the area most terms. The designation of a coor­ dinator comes a year after north Morrow county residents made a request for more involvement from the college. Last fall a study was conducted by the college to determine the needs and interest of Boardman and Irrigon residents. As a result the number of classes offered in the area was increased both winter and spring terms. Brandi Ball will be the instruc­ tor for both the following ses­ sions: Heppner Sessions 1, July 12-22, level 3, 10-10:45 a.m.; level 1, 11-11:30. lone Session II, July 26-Aug 5, level 7, 10-10:45 a.m.; level 1, 11-11:30 a.m. Sarah Carlson and Sally Walker will be instructors for these sessions: Heppner Session II Aug 9-19, level 5 and 2, 9-9:40 a.m.; level 3 and 4, 9:45-10:25 a.m.; Level 1 and 2, 10:30-11:10 a.m.; preschool (3-5 years) 11:15-11:45 a.m. The American Red Cross has changed their swim lesson classifications. Following is a description of the skills that will be taught a each level. Wajer Exploration Level 1 (previously Beginner V4) Elemen­ tary aquatic skills, water adjust­ ment, buoyancy and breath con­ trol, independent water entry and exit, comfortable movement in the water. Primary Skills Level 2- (previously Beginner 2A ) Breath holding, independent movement in the water, prone and supine floats and glides,, rhythmic breathing, jumping into chest deep water, prone and supine flutter kick and finning, turning over, PFD skills Stroke Readiness Level 3- (previously Advanced Beginners) Retrieve objects off the bottom, bobs, jump into deep water and recover, beginning dive from the side of the pool, crawl stroke with coordinted breathing, beginning level back crawl, and elementary backstroke. Stroke Development Level 4-(previously Advanced Begin- ner/Intermediate) Deep water bobs, standing dive, perfect strokes, elementary backstroke, front and back crawl, beginning breastroke, and sidestroke, turns Stroke Refinement Level 5- (Previously Intermediate) Stride jump, beginning diving board progression, long shallow dive, underwater swimming , perfec­ ting previously learned strokes, beginning butterfly stroke, open turns, and surface dives Skill Proficiency Level 6- (previously Swimmers) Advanc­ ed diving board skill, perfection of strokes, speed turns, basic rescue skills. Advanced Skills Level 7- (previously Adv. Swimmers) Ad­ vanced diving board skills, Perfection and speed on all strokes previously taught, flip turns, and advanced rescue skills. Two days of fun for lone Fourth of July By Anne Morter The lone Fourth of July Celebration gets underway this weekend with two fun-filled days of activités for the whole family. To correct a couple of items from last week’s listings, KORD Radio from the Tri-Cities will broadcast live from the lone City Park from noon to 3 p.m. on July 4. Also, the entry fee to the Shotgun Scramble golf tourna­ ment is $15 per person, and ad­ mission to the youth dance on Sunday. July 3, at the Legion Hall is $1 per person.
