Tennis teams win 4 matches
Lady Cards place second

The Condon Invitational
featured 23 girls teams and 25
boys teams and lots of sunshine
last Saturday, April 16. The lone
lady Cardinals finished the day
with 59 points, good for second
place. The winning team was
Goldendale, Washington with
108. On the boy’s side, the Car­
dinals finished sixth with 32
points. Weston-McEwen won the
meet with 94 points.
Jim Logan was the long Car­
dinal winner o f the day, taking
the 400 m eters in 5 3 .6 3 .
Finishing second was Lars
Krechting in the high jump with
a leap of 6 ’2” . The Cards took
third in the long relay with a time
of 3:53.86. Finishing fifth was
Krechting in the pole vault, 9 ’;
Jacob Taylor in the 800, 2:18.82
and Rob Crum in the 3000
10:59.59. Rounding out the lone
scoring was Luke Swanson sixth
in the pole vault 9 ’ and Jason
Halvorsen’s sixth in the discus,

McEUigott placed in four events
to lead the lady Cardinals effort.
McEUigott tied for second in the
100 meters with a time of 13.35
and placed fourth in the triple
jump at 32’5 ,/4” . She also took
fourth in both the long jump at
15’ 11/8” and the 200 meters in
27.59. April Taylor was the day’s
highest placer with a second in-
the 1500 at 5:37.29. Jamie Lovett
captured third in the discus with
a throw of 99’11” and Kim
Bedortha was third in the 3000 at
14:23.52. The lone 1600 relay
was third at 4:42.24. Also scor­
ing for the lady Cardinals was
Lindee Minster, fourth in the
1500, Suzy Heideman, fourth in
the 100 meter hurdles and Marie
Tworek, fourth in the 3000.
lone boys, girls take
first in track meet

The lone boys and girls track
team took first place in a four way
meet held at Umatilla last Tues­
day, April 12. The girls scored
113'/2 points to easily outdistance
the field of Umatilla, Wahtonka
and Stanfield. The boys race
came down to the 1600 relay bet­
ween Wahtonka and lone. The
Cards won the long relay and
consequently, the meet with 97
points to Wahtonka’s 93.
In girls action, M elissa
McEUigott was a triple winner,
taking the high jump in 4 ’8” , the
triple jump in 32'9” and the 100
in 13.06. Becky Wagenblast won
two events, the 400 in 1:13.45
and the 300 hurdles in 57.27.
Other winners included Suzy
Heideman in the 100 hurdles in
18.94, April Taylor in the 800 in
2:55.88, Laree Anderson in the
200 in 30.01 and Marie Tworek
in the 300 in 15:13.13. The lady
Cardinals also won the 1600 relay
in 4:53.90.
Besides the winning 1600 relay
team for the boys, Lars Krechting
won the high jump with a jump
of 6 '2 ” . Jim Logan took the 400
in 55.32 and Jacob Taylor won
the 800 in 2:22.44.

The lone Tennis teams com­
peted at the Helix Invitational
Tennis Tournament last Saturday.
April 16, held at Blue Mountain
Community College.
Thomas Voegeding ended the
day, vying for third place against
Doug Fine of Helix. In a close,
three-set match, Fine prevailed,
3-6, 6-4, 6-4 for the third place
spot while Voegeding placed
fifth. To get there, he defeated
Jeff Sackett of Weston-McEwen
in the opener, 8-0, then defeated
John West of Mac-Hi, 8-2. He
then played eventual tourney
champion Nick Quaini of Helix
and lost, setting up the game for
third.
In boy’s singles Kelly Morgan
and Jory Crow ell lost to
Sanguino-BIack of Umatilla in the
opening round 4-8 and were
eliminated by Fuller-Rolfe of
Sherman County.
In girl’s singles, Heidi Orem
followed the same path as
Voegeding, losing the third place
match and placing fifth. She
Drama club
presents play,
dinner
The Heppner High School
Drama Club will present a spring
play April 28 at 6 p.m ., April 30
at 8 p.m. and May 1 at 4 p.m. at
the H eppner High School
cafetorium.
“ Give and Take” written by
Michael Scanlan and published
by Baker’s Plays, is a collection
of dramatically presented short
stories which deals with generosi­
ty and greed. There is a cast of
over 30 students, many of whom
will be performing for the first
time.
The first two performances will
include a classy Italian dinner,
complete with table service and
candlelight. Dinner tickets are
. available at Central Market Red
Apple, Murray Drugs, and the
Heppner High School office.
Prices for dinner and theatre
tickets are $7.50 for adults and $5
for students. Tickets for the May
1 performance may be purchas­
ed at the door for $2 adults and
$1 for students.

ches. The boys and girls sported
identical 2-1 records against the
Vikings.

unblemished with a 6-0, 6-0 win
over Clay Hayes. lone’s number
two seed, Mike Green, downed
Kris Neustel 8-2.
In boy’s doubles, Jory Crowell

Senior Center
Bulletin Board
There were 135 people in attendance at the senior dinner April
13 including 20 visitors from Hermiston. A visitor from Japan came
with them. He was interested in learning about senior meal sites as
they are needed in Japan also. Three meals were sent out. Ed Baker
won the meal ticket, Floss Watkins the door prize and Hidekiyo Iwata
from Japan received the guest prize. Members of the Episcopal
Church served. The senior center board met following the meal. The
hostesses for April are Margaret Dubuque and Lynn Bibby, not Luke
Bibby, as previously stated.
The menu for the birthday dinner April 27 will be oven fried
chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls, green beans, jello fruit
salad, cake and ice cream. Members of the First Christian Church
will serve.
There were eight ladies present for the Sunday night movie “ Five
Mile Creek” .
Ten volunteers folded newsletters for the extension Thursday mor­
ning, April 14. The Focus On Health group also met later that mor­
ning to continue plans for the Health Fair. The next Focus meeting
will be April 28 at 11 a.m. Health Choices Inc. will also meet that
day from 3 to 6 p.m. in the senior center dining room.
Other dates to remember: Monday, Bible study-10:30 a.m .,
quilting-1-4 p.m.; Tues. and Thurs., exercise, 10 a.m.; Wednesday,
senior dinner-noon; Friday cards-1 p.m. and Sunday movie-7 p.m.
Some substitute volunteers are needed to fill in on half day shifts
when the regular volunteers are ill or away. Anyone wishing to help
out should come by the office or call 676-9030 to put your name
on the list.
