Letters to the Editor
Who has the courage to say no?
The following letter was writ
ten to Larry Gildea, attorney fo r
Pioneer Resources, representing
the buyers o f the Kinzua Mills.
Dear Sir:
This letter is a protest to the
potential closure of the Kinzua
Lumber Co. mill in Heppner,
Oregon.
I was shocked to hear the news
of the sale and impending shut
down of the very profitable
business that has been the support
of scores of families and the very
life-blood of a very special small
community, for a long, long time.
My interest is not that of a mere
“ o u tsid er” w itnessing this
tragedy. I was bom in Heppner,
raised nearby, and own farmland
locally, so 1 do have personal ties.
I am adding my support to the
public outcry that a terrible
disservice may be about to
happen.
In these days of the en
vironmental awareness, our most
powerful enemies are greed and
the short-sighted people who feed
that greed at the expense of
others. To strip the timber
resources, (with no management
plan) to sell raw timber for ex
port, or to destroy the industrial
resources of a community is
criminal. I pray that as a decision
maker in this venture. Pioneer
Resources will not fall into that
category.
Which one of the purchasers
has the moral courage to rethink
his choices, stand up to this
travesty and say “ no, this is
wrong.”
Please encourage each other to
keep the mill operating. Those
loyal workers deserve to keep
their jobs, their homes and their
community.
Sincerely,
(s) Dorothy (Dobyns) Generaux
Vancouver, WA.
