"Keeping Small Town USA
On The Map" is an article that
surfaced at a recent Heppner
Coordinating Council meeting.
From this article, one of the bits
of advice that might be valuable
to Heppner was ‘Small Town
Staying
Pow er’.
Two
sociologists, Cornelia and Jan
Flora, say rural communities do
well when they:
1. Accept controversy as nor
mal and talk about it in the
newspaper;
2. Keep personalities out of
politics;
3. Cheer for school academics
as much as athletics;
4. Tax themselves to maintain
public services;
5. Have some cash left to in
vest in town projects;
6. Have the vision to see
beyond city limits;
7. Have the confidence to share
leadership with one another and
with newcomers.
And to the above I would add
these three:
8. Become diversified to create
additional jobs, rather than de
pend on one key industry;
9. Be open to new ideas and
gather input from young people
just starting out;
10. Remember to celebrate vic
tories and take time to laugh.
So. how do you think we rate?
Give each of the above a score
between one and 10. Do we come
close to 100 percent? You’re all
challenged to put on your creative
thinking caps and throw out as
many ideas as possible on item
eight. What can we manufacture
right here in Heppner that will
create more jobs, draw people to
us, and help our economy? Drop
your ideas in the'mail: My Idea,
PO Box 1232. Heppner. 97836.
