Anabolic Steroid Use
by Male Athletes
If y o u ’re sh o p p in g for a boat

Body builders and other ath
letes in recent years have shown
interest in a group o f prescription
drugs called anabolic steroids.
These drugs, which also are re
ferred to as "male hormones," are
used to increase m uscle mass, im
prove strength, and provide more
power. They are synthetic deriva
tives o f the naturally occurring
male hormone testosterone. Le
gitimate medical uses for anabolic
steroids include male hormone
deficiency and breast cancer.

Athletes who use anabolic ste
roids claim that they promote
muscle mass growth. W hilemuscle
development may be seen with
large doses in men. the same is not
always true in younger boys. Oth
ers have claimed that these dnigs
increase blood volume and the con
centration o f hemoglobin in the
blood, increasing the capacity of
the blood to deliver oxygen to
working m uscles. R esearchers
have shown this effect to be rather
small and unreliable. And the re
sults o f studies regarding the e f
fects o f these drugs on aerobic
capacity, increased athletic per
formance. and body composition
changes have been mixed.
Health experts are concerned
about the adverse effects associ
ated with anabolic steroid use. Men
may experience testicular atrophy,
impotence, decreased production
o f sperm, and breast enlargement.
Changes in liver function, cirrho
sis. and liver cancer have been
reported.
