Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 2, 1994 - THREE
Mustangs defeat TigerScots 60-47
The Mustangs were out to get
revenge, Saturday, Feb. 26, for
a disappointing loss to the
TigerScots in last years District
championship game. But the
game started as anything but
revenge.
The TigerScots came out blaz
ing and the Mustangs were a lit
tle flat. Weston-McEwen was on
fire for the first four minutes of
the first quarter. Two baskets by
6’7” sophomore Bill Albert and
three point bombs by Louie
Quaempts and Curt Sloan staked
Weston-McEwen to a 19-5 lead
and the Mustangs were left
stunned.
Coach Lee Padberg changed
defenses,
som ething
the
Mustangs would do several times
during the game, and pressed the
T igerS cots. Suddenly the
momentum changed. The
Mustangs got back into the game
and trailed only 27-24 at the
halftime break.
The second half was all
Mustangs. Heppner had several
six and eight point runs and coach
Dwayne Dunlap had used all his
timeouts early in the fourth
quarter.
Rick Koffler, the most valuable
player of the district tournament,
led the Mustangs with 21 points
on 7-14 from the field and 4-6
from the charity stripe. Koffler
also added six rebounds. Seniors
Joe Healy and Sam Sumner
dominated inside and outside.

Rick Koffler knocks ball from TigerScots’ hand
Healy hit several 15 foot jumpers
and took the ball to the hole and
drew several fouls. He finished
with 14 points. Sumner was a
perfect 6-6 from the field and
owned the backboards with eight
rebounds. He also added four
steals.
The silent hero of the game
might have been point guard
Trent Hughes. He faced Curt
Sloan defensively and held him to
only seven points. Hughes played
31 minutes and set up the offense
and added eight assists. Len Britt-
ner had nine points and six assists
on the evening.
The TigerScots were led by
Louie Quaempts with 10 points.
Mustangs beat Huskies, clinch spot
The Mustangs clinched a spot
in the Regional Tournament Fri
day afternoon, Feb. 25, with a
53-36 drubbing of the Huskies.
Heppner exploded out of the gate
with a potent offense and a stifl
ing defense and galloped to a
27-10 halftime lead.
Austin Coiner did his usual ex
cellent job of defending 6’5” Bob
Townsend of Sherman County,
the Huskies’ only real threat.
Townsend ended up with 16
points, but many of those came
with the game already decided.
The Mustangs were led by
seniors Rick Koffler, Len Britt-
ner and Joe Healy. Koffler had a
good all around game with 16
points, seven assists and four
steals, Brittner had 11 points and
six rebounds and Healy chipped
in with nine counters and six
rebounds.
