Mustangs cage Huskies
Heppner bombs Rockets 74-56
The Heppner Mustangs were
hitting on all cylinders, Friday.
Feb. 11, as they ran right past the
visiting Pilot Rock Rockets in a
74-56 romp that wasn’t close.
Heppner played a sensational
first half, taking a 38-19 lead in
to the locker room. Senior Rick
Koffler had a great first half and
game, hitting 6-8 from the field,
including four three pointers in
the half. He finished with 18
points on 7-10 shooting from the
field. Senior Len Brittner led the
scoring parade with 24 points on
9-14 from the field. As a team,
Heppner was 27-57 from the
field, an eye popping 47 percent.
The Mustangs forte is quickly
becoming an aggressive man-to-
man defense. The defense held a
Pilot Rock to 33 points through
the first three quarters and held
their top scorers, Casey Perkins
and Byran Ellis, to a combined
nine points on the evening.
Koffler led the Mustangs on the
boards with nine rebounds and
added 10 assists, a season high
for him. Sam Sumner had seven
boards and Dwayne Dunaway
added five.
The victory was the Mustangs’
eighth in league play against one
loss and hurt the Rockets chances
of finishing fourth place in the
CBC and qualifying for post
season play.

The Heppner Mustangs travel
ed to Sherman County Saturday,
Feb. 12. and brought home a hard
fought 49-32 victory.
The Huskies are short on talent
but play well as a team and on
their home court they are tough
to beat. The Mustangs took a
19-13 lead in the first quarter as
Heppner got it going on the break
and Joe Healy scored several
baskets converting on the break.
Heppner was lulled to sleep
against the Huskies and their 2-3
zone defense. Sherman County
crept within three points at the
half and were down only 29-27
at the third quarter break.
The Mustangs exploded in the
fourth quarter. Rick Koffler
ignited the rally with a four-point
play, sinking a three pointer and
getting fouled in the process.
Koffler led the Mustangs with 15
points and six steals on the even
ing. Heppner outscored Sherman
County 20-5 in the last period to
win.
Sam Sumner found some open
spots in the zone and tallied eight
points in the final quarter and
snagged seven rebounds. Austin
Coiner grabbed a game high 12
rebounds and did a solid job on
the Huskies’ 6 ’5 ” star Bob
Townsend, who finished with 20
points on six field goals and 7-10
foul shots.
Heppner (9-1, 14-4), moved
one step closer to the league
championship with the win. With
only two league games remain
ing, the Mustangs would have to
lose both games this weekend to
not win their second league title
in as many years.
The Mustangs host the Weston-
McEwen TigerScots Friday, Feb.
Lady Cards beat Echo
18, and travel to Umatilla Satur
day, Feb. 19 to end the league
season.
The TigerScots put the only
1
blemish on the Mustangs’ season
two weeks ago and are the only
team with a mathematical chance
of tying Heppner for the league
title.

Melissa McElligott looks for room between Echo players
By Anne Morter
On Saturday, Feb. 12, the lady
Cards looked ready to cruise to
an easy win against Echo, but had
to fight in the fourth quarter to
take the 60-50 victory.
Leading 19-11 at the end of one
and 34-22 at the half, the young
Cougar team capitalized in the
third quarter when the Cardinals
faltered, pulling to within two
points at the end of three, 39-41.
However, the lady Cards turned
the tables early in the fourth, tak
ing advantage of several Echo
miscues. Within minutes, lone
turned a two point lead into a 17
point margin, ending the game
with a 60-50 victory.
Melissa McElligott led all
scorers with 24 points. Becky

Wagenblast added 11. McElligott
also led the team in rebounds and
steals with eight and five respec
tively. April Taylor paced the
squad with four assists.
The lady Cards shooting
percentages improved as they
connected on 24 of 58 for 41 per
cent from the field. At the line,
they made 10 of 16 for 63 per
cent. Echo made 19 of 51 for 35
percent from the floor and 11 of
18 for 61 percent at the line.
“ We played with a lot more in
te n sity ,” said coach Dana
H eidem an. He noted that
McElligott and Wagenblast had
good games while the post
players struggled. “ It was a good
warm up game for district,” he
said. “ We had to play hard to
win and that's what we need." he
added.
