Thousands of students in 50
states and several countries at
nearly 4,000 schools faced their
computers and 200 tough ques
tions to vie for top scores based
on the accuracy and speed of their
answers. The HHS team scored
1,021 of 2,000 possible points.
Riverside scored 1.031 and lone
scored 949.
Academic coach Mrs. Dutcher
described the event as “ an ex
citing interaction among a group
of students who haven’t worked
together before in the classroom
or any other differences in age
or any other area because of their
differences in and interests. It is
an intellectual exercise as well as
a cooperative learning experience
for the students.”
The Knowledge Master Opens
was designed to stimulate interest
and recognition for academic ac
complishment. The contest runs
on classroom computers to allow
all students the opportunity to
compete in a large academic
event without the expense of
traveling to a central site.

The lone Cardinals improved
their league record to 6-0 last
weekend with a 65-49 win over
Echo on Friday, Jan. 28 and a
victory against Condon Jan. 29.
A young but improving Echo
team hung with the Cards until
halftime, trailing by just eight
points at the break. The Cardinals
got moving a little better in the
third quarter as they pulled away
to a 65-49 victory. “ We had our
mom ents,’’ said coach Del
LaRue of the game, “ but they
were few and far between. We
didn’t flex our muscles.”
Jason Halvorsen led the Cards
in scoring with 19 points. Aaron
Heideman added 18. lone
dominated the boards 53-21, led
by Heideman with 11. Jim Logan
in a fine effort for a guard, had
10, Jared Ashbeck added nine
and Jake Bacon and Halvorsen
each had seven. Logan led with
six assists and Ashbeck had six
steals. Heideman slapped down
three shots and Halvorsen added
two.
The Cardinals shot 28 of 67
from the floor for 42 percent and
eight of 16 for 50 percent from
the line. The Cougars shot just 18
of 59 for 3 1 percent from the
floor but made 12 of 19 for 63
percent from the line.
“ We played well enough to
win,” said LaRue. “ Sometimes
we seemed to be just going
through the motions. I guess
when you can do that and still win
by 16, it’s OK,” he added.
