Mustangs bite Sherman Huskies 55-38
The Heppner Mustangs cruis
ed to their fifth-straight league
win of the season Saturday, Jan.
22 as they dominated the visiting
Sherman County Huskies 55-38.
The final score wasn’t an in
dication of the ease with which
the Mustangs overpowered the
Huskies. The Huskies looked
good on paper, starting a 6’7”
center and a 6’5” forward, but
they forgot to bring their guards.
Heppner used a suffocating
man-to-man defense in the first
half and a stingy zone defense in
the second half to completely sub
due the Huskies. Rick Koffler and
Leonard Brittner tied for game
scoring honors, each hitting for
13 points. Big Bob Townsend, a
6’5” scorer for the Huskies led
all scorers with 19 points, half of
Sherman County’s total.
The Mustangs mehodically rip-
ped apart the Huskies 1-3-1 zone
defense with good skip passing
and great feeds to open
Mustangs.
Austin Coiner and Joe Healy
led the Mustangs with six re
bounds each and Koffler had six
assists for Heppner.
The win for the Mustangs 5-0,
10-3, kept them in first place in
the CBC. Heppner has a light
schedule this week as they have
a bye on Friday night and host the
Wahtonka Eagles Saturday, Jan.
29.
The CBC schedule has several
quirks in it this year. The
Mustangs play Wahtonka twice
before they play W eston-
M cEwen once. They play
Weston-McEwen twice in a short
period of time and played the
Umatilla Vikings at the first of the
season and the last of the season.

Saturday, Jan. 22, the lone
Cardinals found themselves a bit
tired from the night before when
they took the court against
Wheeler and beat the Falcons
66-55.
“ We did not play exceptional
ly well,” said coach Del LaRue.
“ We didn’t really have any legs
left from Friday night and we
didn't play very smart,” he add
ed. At the end of the first
quarter, the Cards were up 22-13
and by halftime, held a 38-25 ad
vantage. But turnovers and bad
moves started to cost in the se
cond half when the Falcons got
to within six points. With just
over two minutes in the game,
the Cards were up by 17. “ All
of a sudden we did some dumb
things,” said LaRue, noting that
bad passes and a couple of fouls
on three point shots brought the
Falcons closer at the end of the
game. The final score of 66-55
in favor of the Cardinals brought
a sigh of relief from LaRue. “ It
was nice to get out of there
alive,” he said.
Jared Ashbeck was the game’s
high scorer with 22 points. Jason
Halvorsen had 14 and Aaron
Heideman added 12. The re
bounding was a fairly even bat
tle. For the Cards. Heideman led
with 11 and Halvorsen and Jim
Logan added 10 each. Logan,
for the second- night in a row,
tallied nine assists while Jason
Proudfoot and Heideman each
had three steals in the game.
Halvorsen had three blocked
shots.
The Cards shot much better
than their opponents, hitting 30
of 65 for 46 percent from the
floor. At the line, they continued
to struggle, making just four of
10 for 40 percent. The Falcons
shot 20 of 69 for 29 percent from
the field. At the line, they hit 12
of 22 for 55 percent
“ I feel good about getting
through the weekend. It was pro
bably our toughest overall
weekend.” said LaRue, noting
the
two
tough
team s
back-to-back.
The Cards travel to Echo on
Friday. Jan. 28 for three games
starting at 4:30 p.m. Saturday,
Jan. 29. Condon comes to town
for four games beginning at 1
p.m.

Comittee, at its meeting in Irrigon
last week, voted to contract with
the students in the lone shop en
trepreneurial class “ We Make
Products” to make racks to hold
pamphlets dealing with attractions
in Morrow County. These racks
will be placed in various
businesses in the county so that
the information would be readi
ly accessible to tourists, hunters
and others passing through.
There will be inform ative
brochures dealing with such at
tractions as parks and lakes, the
Oregon Trail, the museum, the
courthouse, the Blue Mountain
Scenic Byway, atractions in the
nine counties of the Eastern
Oregon Visitors Association, the
Irrigon Fish Hatchery and the
Umatilla Wildlife Refuge. This is
just one of the many projects that
have been completed by the
Tourism Committee since its
organization in 1986.

with this group is invited to con

Holly Eckman looks for way around Husky defenders
The Fillies remained tied for
first in the CBC league beating
the Sherman County Huskies
59-39 Saturday night. Jan. 22 in
Heppner. The Fillies are tied with
Weston-McEwen tor first place.
Heppner outscored the Huskies
in three quarters and were led by
Kelsie Evans with 22 and Holly
Eckman with 17. Tiah Sanderson
contributed 12 points for the
Huskies.
The Junior Varsity team lost to
Sherman in a close game. 40-41.
In sports there’s a phrase call
ed winning ugly, and that's just
what the Heppner Mustangs did
Friday night. Jan. 21 at Pilot
Rock, struggling to beat the
Rockets 51-41.
After leading by 10 points at
the half, the Mustangs found
themselves locked in a tight game
against the stubborn Rockets mid
way through the fourth quarter,
leading 34-31. Junior guard Trent
Hughes provided the impetus for
Heppner to spring past Pilot
Rock. Hughes hit two big treys
from the top of the circle, giving
the Mustangs a 40-31 lead that
they never lost. He also hit three
free throws down the stretch to
seal the victory. Heppner was a
mediocre 14-29 from the charity
stripe for the game.
High scorers for Heppner were
seniors Rick Koffler with 11
points and three three-pointers
and Joe Healy with 10 points and
four rebounds. Healy also did a
solid job on the Rockets' high
scoring Byran Ellis, who topped
all scorers with 16 points.
Austin Coiner, who seems to
turn in a steady performance
every time out. led the Mustangs
at the backboard with eight
rebounds.
Although the Mustangs suf
fered through 34 percent
shooting, going 16-47 from the
field, they played great defense,
holding the Rockets to a season
low 41 points.
Good teams win even when
they don't have great perfor
mances and the Mustangs (4-0.
9-3) won their fourth league game
against no losses. They also took
control of first place in the CBC
as the Stanfield Tigers upset the
Weston-McEwen TigerScots at
Athena Friday night.

years the program has grown
by word of mouth. Pastor Hoob-
