Vernon E. Munkers
Vernon E. Munkers, 83, of
Salem, formerly of Lexington,
died Thursday, January 6, 1994
in Salem.
Graveside services were held
Tuesday at the Lexington
Cemetery. The funeral was held
Monday at the First Christian
Church in Salem.
Mr. Munkers was bom Nov. 2,
1910 near Lexington to William
Frank and Mary Edna Palmer
Munkers. He grew up in Lex
ington and attended local schools
graduating from Lexington High
School in 1929.
He married Erma Fay Luttrell
on June 2, 1934, in Vancouver,
WA.
He had a wheat ranch near
Lexington until his retirement to
Salem in 1975. While in Morrow
County he was active in com
munity affairs including Morrow
County Grain Growers, Oregon
Wheat League and the school
board. While in Salem he was a
member of the First Christian
Church.
His hobbies included fishing,
camping and traveling. He built
and flew model airplanes.
Survivors include his wife Fay,
at the home; a daughter, Marilyn
Ross of Salem; a brother,
Leonard Munkers of Lexington;
three grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be
made to the American Diabetic
Association or a charity of
choice.

Wavel B. Wilkinson
Wavel B. Wilkinson. 93, a
long-time resident of Heppner,
died Sunday, Jan. 9, 1994 in
Denver, Colorado, where she had
resided for the past 18 months
with her daughter and son-in-law.
Memorial services will be held
Sunday, Jan. 16 at All Saints
Episcopal Church in Heppner at
10:30 a.m. during regular church
services dedicated to Mrs.
Wilkinson.
Mrs. Wilkinson was one of
twin daughters born to Fred and
Birdie Ball of Fossil. She attend
ed grade school in Fossil and St.
Mary’s in The Dalles graduating
from high school at St. Mary’s
Academy in Portland. She attend
ed Oregon State College until her
marriage to Frank Wilkinson on
Dec. 14, 1920.
Mrs. Wilkinson was a long
time member of the Lexington
Grange, Ruth Locust Chapter
#32, Order of the Eastern Star.
Nydia Temple #4, Daughters of
the Nile and an active member of
All Saints Episcopal Church.
She is survived by a son Dick

Wilkinson Oslund. Denver; gran-

great grandson, Ian Elliott. Mr.
Wilkinson preceded her in death
in 1957.

Doris Bell Castor
Former Heppner resident Doris
Bell Castor, 82, of Ontario, died
in Hermiston Sunday, Jan. 2,
1994.
Graveside services were held
Thursday, Jan. 6 at the Owyhee
Cemetery, Nyssa.
Mrs. Castor was bom on
February 14, 1911 in Portland to
Richard A. and Eleanor Nay
Butler. She married Harold
Castor on March 4, 1953 in Van
couver, WA. They lived in Hepp
ner, Hermiston and Pilot Rock
for several years before moving
to the Ontario area, where they
retired. She moved to Hermiston
three years ago to be near her
son.

Edna Peral Bailey
Edna Pearl Bailey, 80, of
Heppner, died Monday, January
10, 1994 at Pioneer Memorial
Nursing Home.
Memorial services will be held
at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13 at
the Heppner Masonic Cemetery.
Mrs. Bailey was bom July 15,
1913 at Fossil to Robert Crockett
and Margaret Ada Jenkins. She
was raised with her three brothers
at the family homestead on Ser
vice Creek.
On July 2, 1934 she married
Raymond Herbert Bailey in Con
don. They moved from Kinzua to
the Heppner area in 1940 where
they lived until he passed away.
Mrs. Bailey was a member of
the United Methodist Church and
a past member of the American
Legion Auxiliary and Degree of
Honor Lodge.
She retired from the Pioneer
Memorial Hospital where she
worked for many years in the
kitchen.
Mrs. Bailey enjoyed garden
ing, sewing, car rides in the coun
try and in her younger years
dances, especially those at
Hardman.
She was a caring and loving
wife and mother who was
dedicated to her family and home.
Survivors include her son
Charles and his wife Elizabeth of
Heppner; daughter Colleen and
her husband Harley Harris of
Wasilla, AK.; three grand
children Troy Snow, Sheila
Robinson and Desiree Harris;
five great grandchildren Troy
Justin, Stevi Kay, Jessie, Kristina
and Kaleb, all in Alaska. Her
husband and brothers Jim, Jack
and Oscar all preceded her in
death.

Melvin “ Pinky” Allen
The funeral for Melvin Lyle
“ Pinky” Allen, will be Thurs
day. Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Lex
ington Baptist Church. Con
cluding service and burial will
follow at the Lexington
Cemetery.
Mr. Allyn, 74. of Lexington,
died Monday, Jan. 10, 1994 at St.
Vincent Hospital in Portland.
He was born Nov. 9, 1919 at
Lexington to George and Cora
Russell Allen. He grew up at
Lexington and attended school
there, graduating from Lexington
High School.
He entered the U.S. Army on
Jan. 9, 1942 during World War
II. He served in Africa, Sicily,
Italy, South France, and Ger
many. He was discharged in 1945
and following his discharge he
worked in California for several
years before returning to Morrow
County.
On Feb. 14. 1969, he married
Lois Jenks at Portland.
He worked at service stations
in Lexington, Heppner and
Boardman and also worked for E
and L Farms in Lexington from
1972 until 1982.
He was a member of the Socie
ty of the Third Infantry Division
and lone American Legion Post
95.
He is survived by his wife
Lois, at the home.

He was released on his own
recognizance;

deputy responded to a fire alarm
at the Columbia Junior High in Ir-
rigon. Alarm turned out to be

residence on 4th Street for a male
subject with an unknown illness.

ment on Ripee Road, Boardman.
January 7: Morrow County
deputy responded to a report that
there was a fire at the mountain
cabin of Mark Rietmann, of
Ruggs.
January 8: Morrow County
Sheriff s office dispatched the
Condon ambulance to a residence
near Condon for a 45 year old
male with an unknown illness.
One person was transported to
Mid Columbia Medical Center in
The Dalles;

responded to an Irrigon residence
to investigate a report of criminal
mischief;
M orrow County deputy
responded to an audible burglar
alarm at lone High School. Depu
ty was unable to locate any
intruder;
Morrow County Sheriffs of

female with an unknown injury.
There was no transport;
Morrow County Sheriff s of

on a Washington State Warrant
for Disobeying a Court Order.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class
Anne M. GUcrease recently
departed for a six-month Western
Pacific and Persian Gulf deploy
ment aboard the destroyer tender
USS Acadia, homeported in San
Diego.
Despite their title, destroyer
tenders service a variety of ships.
Their crews are formed mainly of
technicians and repairmen. The
644-foot long Acadia is capable
of providing care to as many as
five destroyers at one time.
Gilcrease is one of 1,400
cremen aboard the Acadia which
made its first port visit of the
deployment to Bali.
This deployment marks the
seventh
time
that
the *
Yellowstone-class destroyer
tender has participated in a
western pacific cruise since its
commissioning in 1981.
Gilcrease’s husband Jason is
the son of Fred and Dorothy
Gilcrease, Irrigon.
