“ A” basketball team took on the
Umatilla “ B” team Dec. 8 at
lone for the Cardinals’ season
opener. The game was slow, but
the lone team came away with a
win 17-6.
Megan Proudfoot was the Car

Childers led in assists. Jenny
Sullivan had eight rebounds and
Kara Miller had four steals.
The Cardinals “ B” team lost
their game.

Heideman. The lady Cards shot
29 of 65 for 45 percent from the
field and three for five for 60 per
cent at the line.
Heideman continues to be
pleased with his team’s play.
“ We’re getting better all the
time. W e’re on a roll,” he said.
This Saturday, the Cardinals
will host Heppner with the JV
games starting at 1 p.m.

A 30-2 first quarter set the
stage for a long game for the
Cascade Locks Pirates last Satur
day, Dec. 11. The lady Cards
substituted heavily and spread the
playing time around, and still
roiled to a 63-28 win. “ It was a
long shot from any of the other
games we’ve played this season,”
said coach Dana Heideman. “ It
was a real mismatch.”

The lone Cardinals “ A ” team
defeated the Umatilla Vikings
46-36 in lone in the first game for
the boys.
The Cards jumped out to an
early 22-3 lead in the first half
and never looked back. Marc
Orem led the Cardinals with 23
points and 14 rebounds. Jake
McElligott pitched in 14 points.
The C ards out rebounded
Umatilla 35-28 and played superb
defense.
The lone boys “ B” team won
22-20. They were led by the scor
ing of Dan Scott with eight
points. The Cardinals are coach
ed by Dale Holland.
Gun Club
prepares for
new season
The Morrow County Gun Club
kicked off the 1993-94 shooting
season with 17 members par
ticipating in practice shoots Sun
day afternoon Dec. 12. The gun
club will open at noon on Dec.
19 for more practice shooting.
Trapshooting league competi
tion will begin in January.

Saturday, Dec. 11, the Car
dinals finally played a school their
own size and captured that elusive
first win of the season 81-58
against Cascade Locks.
The team took to the court run
ning hard but playing relaxed,
and the score reflected that. The
Cards shot 35 of 67 for 52 per
cent from the floor, with scores
by quarter of 20, 19, 18 and 24.
Jared Ashbeck with 20 points was
one of four Cardinal players in
double figures. Aaron Heideman
added 17, Jake Bacon had 14 and
Jason Proudfoot scored 11.
The Cards controlled the
boards, 38-25. Heideman grabb
ed nine boards and Proudfoot
added eight. Jim Logan had a
busy night on the court with 12
assists and five steals.
“ It was nice to play someone
our own size. The kids relaxed
and shot the ball well. They had
a good time,’’ said coach Del
LaRue. “ Hopefully this is a good
jump-off spot for us,’’ said

Mustangs avenge early loss to Riverside
The Heppner Mustangs aveng
ed their only loss of the season,
Saturday. Dec. 11 at home with
a scrappy 50-47 victory over the
3A Riverside Pirates.
The Pirates had beaten the
Mustangs in the season opener for
the Mustangs’ on Dec. 3 in
Boardman.
The game was an intensely
played game with both teams
playing an aggressive style of
play leading to lots of fouls and
turnovers. Riverside took an early
lead and led 30-27 at the half.
The Mustangs turned things
around in the third quarter,
outscoring Riverside 13-5 with a
full court, man-to-man defense
and an offense that led to high
percentage shots.
Heppner fought hard dow n the
stretch and beat the Pirates at the
free throw line, hitting 6-12 in the
last quarter and 13-24 for the
game.
Seniors Len Brittner and Rick
Koffler led the Mustangs scoring
with 15 points and 12 points
while Brittner and Joe Healy each
grabbed five rebounds. The
Pirates were led by Cody Sandlin
with 12 points. Jeff Moore and
Jon Tallman each added 10 points
for Riverside.
Heppner was 17-40 from the
field for 43 percent for the game
while Riverside hit 19-44 for an
identical 43 percent.

The win was the Mustangs’

travels to lone to play the Car
dinals on Saturday night Dec. 18.
They will then take a long break
for the Christmas vacation before
returning to action January 4.
