By Anne Morter
Heppner jumped on the lone
Cardinals early in the game
Saturday Dee. 4, downing the
Cards 73-61 on the Mustang
home court.
The Cards struggled in the first
half, shooting and executing
poorly. The Mustangs' press add
ed to the Cards’ woes. ‘*We were
tighter than a banjo in the first
half. We panicked a bit,” com
mented LaRue. The Cards relax
ed and played better in the second
half and Heppner pulled off its
press, leading to the final 73-61
score in Heppncr’s favor.
Jim Logan was the game’s high
scorer with 23 points, including
five three-pointers. All of his
points came in the second half, 15

Heideman feels that ’’dumb
mistakes" down the stretch and
troubles on the boards were big
problems for his team. Also he
felt the girls learned a lesson.
“ You have to keep going at the
other team,” he said, “ even if
you have a comfortable lead.”
Overall Heideman ranked his
team ’s weekend effort as

We’re going to keep getting bet

the lone Cardinals Saturday. Dec.

The Mustangs faced the 3A
Riverside Pirates Friday night
and the game was a typical early
season tilt for the Mustangs. The
Pirates broke on top early,
leading 17-11 at the first quarter
break and 31-21 at the half.
The Mustangs were plagued by
turnovers, poor shooting and con
fusion on offense. Heppner could
manage only 12-52 shooting from
the field for 23 percent.
The Mustangs continue to
struggle in the third quarter, scor
ing only five points. The Pirates
led 40-26 and it looked like a rout
was on.
The Mustangs finally caught
fire in the fourth quarter outscor-
ing the Pirates 22-11. coming
within three points. The final
score was 51-48.
Len Brittner sparked the
Mustang rally with 14 of his

shooting. The over aggressive
Pirates were whistled tor 28 fouls
and Heppner shot 23-32 for 72
percent from the line.

win over Umatilla Vikings

their season off with a win and a
loss last weekend, rolling to a

ing. The Cards settled down mid
way through the second quarter,
building a 25-14 halftime advan
tage. The lady Cardinals crack
ed the game wide open scoring 24
points in the fourth quarter,
“ playing the kind of ball we
should,” in the words of coach
Dana Heideman. The final score

blem if the game had been closer
with three starters. April Taylor.
