Mustangs’ stingy defense defeats Eagles lone Cardinals lose to Lyle, 32-26

The Mustangs scored again
with only eight seconds gone in
the second quarter. Full back
Botefuhr banged in from the one
yard line for the score. Junior half
back Trent Hughes had runs of
nine and 15 yards in the drive to
spark the Mustangs. Brittner was
good for the pat and Heppner
took a 20-0 lead into the locker
room at halftime. Brittner was
three of four on the night.
Each team scored once in the
fourth quarter with Kevin Payne
scoring from 11 yards out for the
Mustangs. Wahtonka scored a
meaningless touchdown on a 36
yard run late in the fourth quarter.
Crunch time comes this Friday
night, Oct. 29 as Heppner travels
to Athena to meet CBC co-leader
Weston-McEwen. The Tiger-
Scots are 7-0 in the season, and
feature strong running backs in
Chet Mills and Tony Minkler and
a huge line.
Weston-McEwen beat Umatilla
34-20 Friday night Oct. 22 at
Umatilla. The winner of the
Heppner-Weston-McEwen game
will probably win the league ti
tle and host a first round OSAA
playoff game.

The Heppner Mustangs used a
quick start and a stingy defense
to lead them to a 27-6 victory
over the Wahtonka Eagles Friday
night. Oct. 22 at The Dalles. The
win kept the Mustangs tied for the
lead in the Columbia Basin Con
ference at 4-0 with the Weston-
McEwen TigerScots.

School choir will hold a baked
potato feed before the Heppner
Weston-McEwen game on Fri
day, Oct. 29, at Athena. The feed
will be held from 5:30 to 7:15
p.m. at the school next to the
football field.
Potatoes will be served with
toppings, dessert and beverage
for $3. A half potato, toppings,
dessert and beverage will be $2.

After watching last Friday’s
football opponent,
Lyle,
Washington, score first, the lone
Cardinals went to work to build
a 20-14 halftime lead. But 12
unanswered points by Lyle in the
third quarter proved to be too
much for the Cards and they lost
the game, 32-26.
Brian Holtz accounted for the
first two scores with a 33 yard run
and a nine yarder. In the second
quarter, quarterback Jared
Ashbeck connected with Greg
Holtz for a 55 yard touchdown
pass. After the half, Lyle put
three touchdowns on the board
before the Cards managed their
final score, a two yard run by
Ashbeck.
Offensively, the Cards gained
333 yards of total offense, with
188 on the ground and 145 in the
air. However, Lyle cranked out
375 total yards. Lyle’s Griffith
carried for 222 of the total 235
ground yards and they added
another 140 yards passing.
Brian Holtz led the Cardinal
rushers with 104 yards on 20 car
ries. Greg Holtz added 50 yards
and Ashbeck had 38. In the pass
ing department, Ashbeck com
pleted seven of his 12 passes for
145 yards with one interception.
Leading receivers for the Cards
were Jason Proudfoot with 65
yards and Greg Holtz with 57.

The lone lady Cardinals had an
easy time dispatching Helix last
Tuesday, Oct. 19, winning in two
games 15-1, 15-7. Coach Greg
Likens suited down 13 players,
all of whom played and served.
The win moved their league
record to 8-3.
The Cards served 37 of 42 for
88 percent. Marie Tworek led the
way with eight of eight serving,
five aces and seven points. With

“ It was a whole team effort,’’
commented Likens. “ Everyone
got to play and everyone had
fun.”
This week, the Cardinals have
three matches on tap. They
played Condon on Tuesday, and
will play Wheeler on Friday, Oct.
29 and Dufur on Saturday, Oct.
30. With a spot in the district
tournament already in the bag,
the lady Cards don’t need to win
but their team goal is to win all
three to carry some momentum
into the district playoffs. The
district tournament is scheduled
for November 4 at Hermiston
High School.
